Playing a paladin for the first time, and am now 4th level, so have spells (yay). I have some confusion re spells, stats.
I have CHA 18, so am allowed 0 + 4 1st spells per day. (According to what I’ve seen). I’m used to playing a sorcerer, but the rules appear to be different.
The clarification I need between _preparation_ of spells and _casting_ of spells:
On a given day, how many different spells can I prepare v.s. how many times can I cast something in a day?
I.e., Do I get to prepare 4 spells, and cast up to 4 times in a day?
Or do I get to prepare 4 spells, but get fewer actual castings? Or the opposite, prepare only one or two, but can cast 4 times.
As a Sorcerer, I’m used to Cha affecting how many times I can cast, but not the number of spells in my arsenal (and I don’t have to prepare any). I get the sense that each morning a level 4 Paladin with Cha 18 chooses 4 spells from the paladin list, and then 4 times a day, they can cast one of those 4 spells.
Also, is this specifically laid out somewhere? The Paladin description says "spells per day" which could be read as options or castings. One of my part members reckons is one casting, 4 spell options, so it would be nice to point to something specific to resolve it.
Cheers,

As a 4th level paladin you can prepare and cast 1 spell per day (0 base slots, +1 for high charisma). To cast a spell, you prepare it ahead of time. Once you have more slots you can prepare more spells. Each slot you prepare a spell in grants you one casting of that spell, so if you want to use a specific spell more than once you have to prepare it more than once.

To elaborate, lets say your Paladin is lvl 7. You get 1+Cha tier 1 spells and 0+Cha tier 2 spells per day. Lets say your Cha modifier is +4. So you can prepare and cast up to 5 tier 1 spells and 4 tier 2 spells per day. So lets say you prepare the following:
Tier 1)
1) Bless Weapon
2) Bless Weapon
3) Endure Elements
4) Protection from Chaos
5) Protection from Evil
Tier 2)
1) Remove Paralysis
2) Remove Paralysis
3) Bull's Strength
4) Zone of Truth
If you want to be able to cast a spell more than once in the day, you need to prepare it in multiple slots. So, in the above example, you could only cast Endure Elements once in that day since you only prepared it once, whereas Bless Weapon and Remove Paralysis were each prepared twice and can each be cast up to twice in that day.

Your numbers are off. You don't get Cha mod in slots, you get a number based on your Charisma. An 18 Cha gets you a single bonus first level slot and a single bonus second level slot. It also grants a single 3rd and a single 4th, once you get high enough to use that. (You get a single bonus slot when your modifier equals the spell slot's level, plus one more for each four points higher your modifier is. For an example, a +1 modifier gets you 1 first level slot, a +5 gets you 2, a +9 gets you 3, and so on.)

You use the Bonus Spells per Day chart in the Core Rulebook to see how many extra spells you get. From that chart you'll see that an 18 CHA gets you one bonus spell each for level 1-4 spells. However, you only get these bonus spells if you are able to cast spells at that level. So at level 4 you get 0 level 1 spells from being level 4 and 1 "bonus" level 1 spell from having an 18 CHA.
On another note, as you get higher level and have the gold for it, you'll probably find Pearls of Power are a good buy for you. 1000 gp gets you a level 1 pearl, which allows you - as a standard action - to "get back" one level 1 spell that you had prepared and cast.

That is an insane number of bonus spells your groups been getting, im a little jealous, But anyway, you have 2 types of casters:
Prepared casters who have spells slots; they use spells like bullets in a gun, you prepare or load a spell of your choice and once you cast it "fire it" it is gone you cant use that spell again unless you had a second one prepared or loaded of the same type.
The other type is spontaneous casters like the sorcerer you have played, who know a small number of spells but can cast them as they please with out having to worry about expending a specific spell.
Prepared casters are as followed:
Cleric, Druid, Shaman, Witch, Wizard, Alchemist*, Investigator*, Magus, Warpriest, Paladin, Ranger
Spontaneous Casters are as followed:
Oracle, Sorcerer, Bard, Hunter, Inquisitor, Skald, Summoner,Bloodrager
