Sustained by Faith

Rules Questions

1 person marked this as FAQ candidate.

Hello everybody,
I decided to join this forum cause I have a question to ask about "sustained by Faith" mythic ability.

Straight to the point: Does Cleric regain spells using 1 mythic point?

I have a strong feeling about there's an errata corridge, or a mistype if you prefer, in Sustained by Faith description due to the fact that clerics does NOT need 8 hours of resting to regain spells.
Assuming that, the same problem will be again, and again for cleric only, for Recuperation 3rd tier base Mythic ability because spending 1 hour resting to recover (I copy and paste it):
"This rest is treated as 8 hours of sleep for such abilities".

Now again to my main question, for me it's crystal clear that clerics can regain spells/spell slots by spending 1 mythic point and meditating for 1 hour otherwise I'm wondering, why should arcane casters should get this benefit while clerics don't?
Why should the Hyerophant give this big advantage to an arcane caster and not to a more suitable class (i.e. cleric)?
Why should this ability be called Sustained by Faith and give more "sustain" to character classes who are not directly related with faith?

I thank you in advance for all the replies, wich i specify will be always respected but taken as opinions only.
I hopefully wait the answer from an author to this question because, being myself a Roleplayer from over 25 years already gave me my ideas and opinions.

Thank you!

Cleric do not need to rest to recharge spells. The payback is, they can only do so once per day at a predetermined time of the day. Anything that count as rest does jack for a cleric. Without "Recuperation" cleric method of "recharge" is definetly better, since among other things they do not care for sleep interruptions. But once that comes in play, they have less to benefit from it. It's called asymmetrical balance, and it's part of this game from it's inception.

totally agree.

Respectable opinion.
Still waiting for the answer I asked from who I asked :D

Oh by the way you're saying that even Recuperation won't work for clerics to regain spells right?

Adding a thing on why i wait for an author to answer me.

Some time ago you maxOO just typed this in a post about sustained by faith you made (you got no replies):
"furthermore, even if a hierophant can with this path ability regain spells, according to the basic magic rules, can or can't be spells casted in the last 8 hours?" (Copied and pasted).

So I'm wondering what are you "totally agree" to? :D

Generally, authors and developers only comment on threads with real contention. In this case, the answer is reasonably clear: Sustained by Faith doesn't allow you to prepare spells more frequently.

As far as Recuperation goes, there's a little more dispute. As written, it doesn't allow anyone to prep spells, as arcane casters can only prep spells once every 24 hours, and divine casters can only prep spells at a specific time. That said, Recuperation allows you to "regain the use of any class features that are limited to a certain number of uses per day (such as barbarian rage, bardic performance, spells per day, and so on)." So, since you are unable to prepare spells but explicitly regain use of them, the general consensus (so far as I'm aware) is that your most recently prepared spells are refreshed and can be cast again.

That's true. Sustained by faith is absolutely clear about it and there's no chance a cleric can have his spells back. With recuperation is slightly different.

A100% core race cleric gets a lame boon from this ability but, think to an half demon cleric of Rovagug, well, he should gets his demon spell like ability back with recuperation or if he has some prestige class with spells or ability with a daily usage, he should gets those back too.

I was looking for confirmation about what to me was clear( clerics get no spells back) but in case I was wrong what to do with the RAW of the 8 hours.

Listen to your father boy!
Sustained by faith clearly dosen't give a cleric his spells back.

Nice pa Finwe:D

And thank you all for the partecipation and opinions.
But seriously I'm still waiting for authors.
Let an ability from hyerophant called Sustained by Faith regain spells only to arcane spellcasters or it's a written mistake or it's simply stupid.

Seriously this will be the first (and only) game system with such a conceptual b+~~&*@! :D
I can't believe it!

IMO least but not last it's much more impactful for arcane spellcasters in a game.

It doesn't let you regain arcane spells, either. You can only regain arcane spells once every 24 hours. It will, however, get you channels, domain abilities, spell-like abilities, and other abilities usable a limited number of times a day. And you get all that without spending a point of mythic power. Oh, and you don't need to eat, drink, or sleep, and you can ignore the need to breathe for an entire day with a single mythic point. It's actually one of the hierophant's best mythic abilities, in my opinion; it was the third one my Mythic Cleric picked up.

Picture of the last person who waited for an author to chime in on their trivial question.

The guy who wrote hat particular ability might be a freelancer for all you know. One who doesn't often browse the forums, and certainly doesn't read every thread.

Forums are, as a general rule, for the COMMUNITY to discuss things.

We get people like you all the time that insists on special treatment from the designers and whatnot for some reason. They rarely get a response.

Ability in question:

"You require no food, water, or sleep. If you have abilities or class features that require rest before they can be regained, you can choose to regain them once per day by spending 1 hour in uninterrupted meditation. If you are 3rd tier or higher, you can expend one use of mythic power in order to also not need to breathe for 24 hours."

It's clear cut as it can get. Anything that requires rest can be regained with an hour of meditation.

Cleric spells don't require rest.

End of story.

You clearly don't like it.

Too bad.

Lots of people don't like lots of things. They deal with it. In some cases, there will be a FAQ or errata, so they get their wish.

Don't hold your breath for it.

No that's wrong. For sure arcane casters regain.

In my opinion instead thinking this ability worths anything cause you don't need to eat or drink (on a cleric) uhmmmm :D

The ability is "Sustained by faith"and the emphasis is on "Sustained" not bless nor favor, nor gift or anything else . The divinity power fuels your body and you don't need to eat drink or sleep anymore. That's all. In addition you get, even if you don't sleep, after one hour of meditation all the abilities that need rest to be regained.

No need to blame the game or the "concept" if this ability doesn't work the way you like.
Remember that there is another ability that by spending 1 MP gives the mage the power to cast ONE extra spell and according to your opinion you should refresh all your spell for free,,,,something is wrong don't you think?

No honestly i'm just new to this forum and as i clearly said in OP all opinions are welcome, even your arrogant one.

The thing is, for what i've been told, that it's not that rare to get an answer from authors or staff so i'm hoping for that what's wrong with you about it?

Some are more active than others, but generally speaking only Mark posts regularly on the forums, and then mostly only on threads where a FAQ has been posted, or about new products he had a hand in.

Mythic Adventures is not one of those products, since it was made before he joined Paizo.

Jason Buhlman, Sean McFarland, and the rest of the designers rarely post unless it's during a playtest.

Most of the freelance authors post only slightly more often, and there's a very good chance they had nothing to do with this particular ability.

More importantly it's incredibly obnoxious behavior to essentially start a thread and then reply to everyone who responds with "That's nice. I don't care. Author pls."

This is a good point.

But the problem is that in the same way Recuperation also should not work for cleric spells and this just can't be, cause it will make him nearly the only class who can't regain spells in that way, not even with a 3rd tier ability.

You know. You are perfectly right on that and i know i'm sounding damn rough and annoying but this is happening cause me and friends had a long long argue about this ability :D so we are looking for, how to say? A definitive solution :D

Oh anyway there is a very old about this and the answer of Jason Bulmahn was:

Thanks for the notes.

Feanor you are wrong with recuperation too....it works like she says

That's it.

That was from the Playtest, the final version of Mythic Adventures (the version you're asking about), would be what they came up with AFTER they went back to the drawing board.

This is what it used to read (from my playtest PDF):

"If you spend at least 1 hour of
prayer or meditation you require no food, water, or sleep
for 24 hours. This time can be the same time you use to
prepare spells. You must still rest 8 hours to regain spells
but you are not subject to fatigue or exhaustion due to a
lack of sleep. Additionally, once per day you may expend
one use of mythic power as a full-round action to refresh
yourself as if you had rested for 8 hours for the purposes
of regaining spells and healing heal hit point and ability
damage."

Much clunkier.

Ok thank you all for your replies.

I still have some doubts about Recuperation:
Recuperation (Ex): At 3rd tier, you are restored to full hit points after 8 hours of rest so long as you aren't dead. In addition, by expending one use of mythic power and resting for 1 hour, you regain a number of hit points equal to half your full hit points (up to a maximum of your full hit points) and regain the use of any class features that are limited to a certain number of uses per day (such as barbarian rage, bardic performance, spells per day, and so on). This rest is treated as 8 hours of sleep for such abilities. This rest doesn't refresh uses of mythic power or any mythic abilities that are limited to a number of times per day.

Those features/abilites between parenthicals are examples or so they seem. But for what i get in case of Recuperation clerics also regain their spells right?

NO spells per day are for example some spells (talking about cleric) a domain gives Example the air domain gives "Lightning Arc (Sp): As a standard action, you can unleash an arc of electricity targeting any foe within 30 feet as a ranged touch attack. This arc of electricity deals 1d6 points of electricity damage + 1 point for every two cleric levels you possess. You can use this ability a number of times per day equal to 3 + your Wisdom modifier." or animal gives "Speak with Animals (Sp): You can speak with animals, as per the spell, for a number of rounds per day equal to 3 + your cleric level." those are the spells a cleric regain like a mage regain only the arcane school daily spells and so on

Thanks Daddy :D
But these are daily so i guess should be refreshed as well with sustained by faith?

Absolutely. My humble opinion is that In addition to the spells per day that Sustained by faith let you get back, with recuperation you get (if you spend 1 MP and rest 1 hour) half your HPs ( if you are a 15th lvl warrior with 200 Hps this means 100 Hps back with one MP and one uninterrupted hour of rest, not bad at all!!)that's all.Now Illeist says that is "common opinion" that you regain all the used spells even if you can't (of course) prepare them again (you can do that only once in 24 hours) but I'm not 100% positive about that.

Do not forget the raw that clearly says that: "When he prepares spells for the coming day, all the spells he has cast within the last 8 hours count against his daily limit." still applies.

Recuperation says:"This rest is treated as 8 hours of sleep for such abilities." so all the spells casted in the last 8 hours count in the daily usage as usual.

I agree it's not bad at all i think it's great also because there's not the limit in doing it only once per day that you have with sustained by faith.

But still Spells per Day are all the spells in the table not only those granted by domain or arcane school.
