How do I do this I've been asked to play tomorrow night but just got in to a message saying to generate stats I have to roll 4d6 9 times, keep the best 3 and allocate them on a grid...
I've been looking on the forum and on Google but can't find anything to explain how to do it, all I seem to find is mathematical arguments...
Could someone explain it to me?

Several threads on this on the boards. Try searching for "grid row column stats"
One method discussed in these threads:
create a 36 cell grid;
6 rows: STR, DEX, CON, INT, WIS, CHA;
6 columns: STR, DEX, CON, INT, WIS, CHA;
roll 3d6 or 4d6 to fill in each cell;
pick one row or one column as your PC's stats.

I'm not sure if this is the method. Because of the weird part about "keeping 3" but the grid method I know of works like this:
You build a 3x3 grid with physical scores and mental scores arranged something like this:
.
.
STR DEX CON
INT |__|____|__|
WIS |__|____|__|
CHA |__|____|__|
Then you fill the grid with your rolls
STR DEX CON
INT |16|__9_|10|
WIS |17|_11_|12|
CHA |_7|_15_|18|
Finally you pick scores. Say you pick the 16 for your strength that means you can't use the 16 for Intelligence and you'd have to use either the 9 or the 10.
So maybe try that? I personally think it's a really fun system.
Edit: Of course I didn't fully read Joana's post. Joana linked the better way to explain it.
