So over in the product discussion for Inner Sea Races (I believe) there was talk of elephant folk, I couldn't resist that idea, so without further ado

(Need a better name than elephantfolk)
Humanoid (Subtype, again, needs a good name);0 RP
Medium;0 RP
30 Feet;0 RP
Standard Languages;0 RP
+2 STR & WIS, -2 DEX
Natural Armor +1;2 RP
Stability; 1 RP
Natural Attack: Gore; 1 RP
Powerful Charge; 2 RP
Prehensile Tail (Trunk);2 RP
Slapping Tail (Trunk);3 RP

Yeah, I know, RP is an imperfect system, and I do feel like there needs to be some fleshing out, and perhaps a flavor trait thrown in there, but its not a bad start, if I do say so myself

GM: "A murder a of tengu bards are surrounding you when you awake. You are high up in a tree, about 40ft, and you have no memory of how you got there. Your mouse familiar is arguing with them about something."

Not bad. :)

Frst off, even though the apparent need to make a playable race of every animal imaginable makes my eyes roll back a tiny bit, I can't argue that I like the general flavor of this one. So, nice job.

Secondly, dump the slapping tail/truck immediately. The prehensile tail is neat, but to me, loading up a playable race with natual attacks just because you can reeks of bad cheese. What you have now is missing out on simple, flavor choices such as a bonus to something wierd like Knowledge (geography), or proficiency with halberds (or whatever). You could makke up something completely new, such as getting a racial bonus where he has a +4 bonus to Int ability checks to remember things.

Thirdly, write up something that has absilutely nothing to do with mechanics. It could be a paragraph or a page, but should be insightful into the elapholk and fun fun the reader.

I'd add scent 15'. Perhaps even blindsense due to keen hearing and scent. Keep prehensile but remove the slap, as noted above.

I am not sure if the +2 should go in STR or CON. Either seems appropriate.

For extra flavor, they would mainly live in Vudra, and could all be of celestial heritage, involving their ancestors mating with a Vudran celestial being. Could we call them Devis? (Devi for singular).

Perhaps they could be Asura or Agathion descended, and have slightly different abilites or resistances dependent on which.

Agathion descendant: resist cold 5, sonic 5
Asura descendant: resist acid 5, electricity 5

Excellent idea! No race is complete without a culture and history. India-based cultures show wonderful reverence for elephants. Also, some Northern barbarian mammoth/mastodon folk would be cool, too.

I'm liking the Devi name, we'll go with that for now, removing slap is a good idea too. I put the bonus to strength because it felt more right to me, kinda the first thing to come to mind when you think elephant. Scent seems like a good choice, dunno why I didn't think of that. I'm thinking a good flavor trait would be something like Survival and Knowledge (Religion) are always class skills. Paragraph/blurb to come later, once I clean up the details a bit

A native Hindi speaker might come up with a better name. I have known some people named Devi, which would be similar Angelica or Angelo in English, derived from Angel.

Loxodon is what they're called in MtG, if you like that name.

There' also the mention of elephant men in the ancient Fantasy General game.
Anyway, I can't shrug the impression that they sgould be large and slow. Elephant can perhaps reach some nice speeds, but that mostly come from being quadruped. Still for quads they're rather slow, but definitely purposeful.
Rather drop the tail fun unless with alternative traits and the gore attack should be an alternative as well.

You can always steal ideas from previous editions, too:

I would definitely give them some skill or magic traits. They have enough physical stuff, flesh them out with some mental stuff.

This is mostly off-topic, but I just had to add: Jared (from MGDMT) has already tried making an elephantfolk rogue.

The two relevant comics:
MGDMT - Elephant Man 1

MGDMT - Elephant Man 2

Note: MGDMT stands for Manly Guys Doing Manly Things. It's a webcomic.

Back on topic...
Yeah, putting slapping/prehensile on the trunk is interesting, but I feel that's too powerful for a core race. Just put the prehensile trunk in as fluff text; it's interesting, but I don't see a mechanical benefit in it. As others have said, I'd replace it with some kind of mental or skill bonus.
Maybe they get Breadth of Experience as a racial bonus feat?

Dark Archive

Might I suggestion calling this race Loxodon, which is the name given for the elephant folk in Magic the Gathering.
