I know it's a couple of months off yet, but I'm hoping to avoid some of the issue I ran into last year during the 'cattle call'* to get into PFS events.

Is there a thread for pre-arranging tables set up already for this year?

*Important to note, given the thousands of people that were showing up for every slot, I can't see a better method of organizing, and kudos to the VC, VL, VO, support staff, and GMs for making it work!

Tickets don't go on sale until next month, so they probably won't start threads like that for the most part until folks can be sure to get their tickets.

What section of the messageboards do those end up in? PaizoCon has it's own subforum (as it should) but I don't think that's the case with GenCon.

I'm also going to be a GenCon n00b this year as well.

I believe the events will go live Next Sunday, the 17th. Unfortunately, I have an all day event planned (Bicycle Brewery Tour), and I won't be able to be on my computer.

Besides PFS events, I'm big into X-Wing minis, and am hopeful for a spot in the Nationals event.

So....how does it work? Site goes live, similar to the badge and housing, and then you see a master list of events to sign up for? I've also heard there's a price for everything?

(I'm hoping my wife can log into my account and snag me some spots, if it truly is a 'Release the Hounds' kind of setup...)

As an aside, how is it for walk-up games, PFS or otherwise? I know there will be a bazillion games I want to try, so I am going to specifically leave quite a bit of free-time in my schedule for that. Or, do I just need to schedule everything that tickles my curiosity and try to not have regrets? ;)

For PFS and D&D games there normally is enough space for walk in's. If you have generic tickets they'll seat you last. If you have a ticket for the event, the Marshall (the volunteer organizing that session) will try to seat you first. It's helpful to go to the area where the event is running in the PFS hall and look players with a similar character level to yours. Again the preference is six people with "real" tickets for that event. The PFS and D&D specials sell out FAST though.

If you have a generic ticket for a independent RPG event with just one table, go early and ask the GM is the game is sold out and if so do you think you can jump in.

There's pickup PFS and independent games run on Wednesday before the con too.

There will be some organized PFS gaming on Wednesday, July 29, as there has been in previous years. I'm still working on the schedule before I make the big announcement. :-D

There will also be some PFS gaming on Monday, August 3rd, about a 45 minute drive away from Indy - if GenCon doesn't *totally* wipe you out, that is ;-)

We have done an excellent job (IMHO) of seating generic ticket holders at GenCon over the past few years. The key is to be flexible on what you can play. High-level tables are usually looking for players so if you have applicable characters, that is your best bet. Alternately, pregens (while not the "best" choice) can get you in on a game you otherwise would not be eligible for. There are also quite a few replayable events offered from things like We Be Goblins! to Quests, to Confirmation/Wounded Wisp. All-in-all, there is a very high probability you will get to play even if your "preferred" event fills up too fast.

Cool, thanks for the info! I don't mind playing pregens. I'm hoping to have a couple of my pfs PCs higher level by then too.

Last year the 5e D&D games blocked most walk-ins. I know I tried to play and was turned away saying there was no space all weekend.

I've only gone to Gencon 1 year but outside of PFS my experience is get tickets or don't count on getting in.

I just looked at the list of events. Wow, there's like 37 Billion games on Thursday alone!

It sounds like you make a wish list, and then submit that on Sunday, and then I guess you get an invoice, pay that with your second mortgage, and....hope you get what you want?

I'll definitely make sure to snag some PFS tickets for sure then, and anything that I know for sure I want to try out. Definitely don't want to lay out all this cash, make the 8 hour drive, and then not get to play! That would be quite the Epic Nat 1 roll, eh?

If it is your first time to GenCon, set aside some time during the day to walk the dealer's room(s). Haven't been in a few years, but I remember spending a whole day in there, finding a bunch of new gems, and playing a lot of demos.

Cosmic Encounter, original edition
Talisman, 2nd Edition
Various PbEM/online games.
Scooby Doo, the card game

A lot of indie games.

Winning a set of 3E books from WotC.

Then again, my first GenCon was at UW Parkside...

Wish list is ready!

It's a good thing I work in Excel all day, cause that spreadsheet was a monster! At least I looked really busy today!

And yes, left a few open windows through the 4 days to be able to wander about.

Man....There is no way you can do even a tenth of everything there! After I got the stuff down I wanted to do THEN I discovered the anime, video games, the workshops, the uh....Adult Only stuff. Man....One could probably spend a month there and still not Do It All!

Anyway, now to get a couple of my PFS characters up a couple levels, learn some Battletech, and oh yeah, try to win my upcoming X-Wing Regional match so I can have a bye at the Nationals! (Yeah....that'll happen!)

Is anyone looking at a better method of marshaling tables for the specials? As a survivor of the crush of almost 1000 people in the hall outside the Sagamore Ballroom, I would hope there was something in the works to improve that process. At the very least, I would think completely clogging that hallway is a safety issue.
