Does the acid damage occur on the initial impact as well, or only in the subsequent rounds if still at the bottom of the pit?

Creatures who fall into the pit take falling damage as normal (the acid counts as a yielding surface), plus 2d6 points of acid damage per round spent in contact with the acid.
You're in contact with the acid on the round you fall in, so yes you would take damage on that round.
