Thats supposedly where the inspiration came from. Same as fennekin was based off a fennec fox.

I believe the official story for the name is that pika is the Japanese onomatopoeia for electric spark noises, and chu is the sound mice make.

That said, the resemblance is a little too close for coincidence. :)

Pika also live in Hokkaido Japan, although obviously a separate species. So they would be something pretty familiar with the Japanese

I spent an entire morning walking around a rockfield at a well known locality for them, but unfortunately the only morning I had to see them was also as foggy as hell. I could have walked 5 feet from one and never have known.
