Ioun stones have a unique quirk. Only two sets of stones that give out enhancement bonuses to ability scores are actually stackable.
Crimson Sphere Ioun Stone
Onyx Rhomboid Ioun Stone
The reason they are stackable is the same reason they are so expensive. That is why the Scarlet and Blue Sphere Ioun Stone only costs a third of the price, even though it gives the same attribute as the Crimson Sphere Ioun Stone as above.
That said the only stackable Ability Score you can get are INT and CON. STR, DEX, WIS, and CHA all cap at +2 via Ioun Stones.

To be clearer, the ioun stones with higher bonuses are referred to as "Advanced Ioun Stones", as per Seekers of Secrets, page 43. The reason Majuba is correct in saying that they aren't PFS legal:
Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Seekers of Secrets
...
Advanced ioun stones are not legal for play.

Thank you James,
Might be a good item on a chronicle sheet :-)

the only improvement I know of that's legal in PFS is something like a (heightened) Continual Flame cast on the ioun stone. It is specifically allowed for a Dull Gray Ioun Stone so it is not a far leap of logic. It is not an upgrade per se.
(as above) for Flawed => Cracked => Normal, you sell at half and buy the new one at full.
It's probably more effective to loan your "old" one out to another party member for the scenario than to sell it.

It's not so much "specifically allowed" as it is that there's a published magic item (ioun torch) that's literally just a dull grey ioun stone with continual flame already cast on it...
Continual flame can be cast on any object, though, so this isn't really anything special for ioun stones...

Except that it is explicitly slotless and is in a place that can grant light unhindered (floating around your head).

And, like the Ioun torch, is great for several classes/builds which need normal light, but also need both hands for other purposes, whether for weapons and shields, or casting spells...

Or you know wait until you have 5PP (generally start of level 2), other wise you're wasting 300gp in functional value of PP (or 75 versus a 1 PP purchase, which I wouldn't ever recommend doing either)
