Shrink item

Rules Questions

The PCs are in a ruined abbey. A couple of the heroes trigger a trap that drops a massive net upon them. The shear weight of the net then drags the PCs off a ledge and into a murky icy pool inhabited by a type of worm that feeds upon human flesh. The weight of the net drags the PCs below the surface forcing them to both fight the worm spawn and face drowning!

The PC Wizard, not caught in the trip casts Mage Hand and attempts to deliver a Shrink Item spell upon the large and heavy net. This net is a big one! Covers a radius of at least 50 ft and is made of different items (rock weights, vines, and iron wire). Would Shrink Item work upon it?

What is the point of Mage Hand?

I think he meant the spell for casting other spells at range. The name escapes me.

Though I dont think there really is a point when the mage could just walk up and touch the thing.

If this giant net is one object up to 2 cubic feet per level of the mage, then yes. I believe he can shrink it.

It's a rather clever solution really.

Spectral Hand

Spectral Hand

That's the one.

Grand Lodge

Going with the assumption that he has cast Spectral Hand I would say that I would allow it to work.

Assuming the wizard is high enough level to affect that much square footage of material (up to 40 cu feet at 20th).

Note: If the net is made out of wire it also could do considerable constriction damage as it shrunk around the people stuck in it... or that's how I would house rule it.

Spectral Hand makes much more sense.

I'm always wary of 'discovered check' GMing, and I'm speaking as a GM here. If thrown net + shrink item = area damage, then what about an adamant wire net?

My experience is that 'hooray - you've cleverly doomed us all!' is not what I want at my table.

I'd probably rule the shrinking net breaks where it needs to, rather than wounding/strangling/bisecting those within.

Also you can give the net a cloth-like consistency per the spell. Given that the net is no longer heavy or metalic, there's no reason to punish your PCs for being clever. Quite the opposite, really.
