So I've been posting normal threads for a while now, but I've heard a bit about these new "Sell me" threads. What advances over normal threads do they have?
...
Seriously though, it's an odd trend as of late for all the sell me threads popping up across the message boards. I wonder what prompted them to start with.
As an actual point to this thread, I'd like to get opinions. Do you think those sort of threads even accomplish what their OP is asking? I kinda have a hunch that many are insincere posts.

I quite enjoy them, though I've never started one.
I don't really mind what the OP's agenda is, what I like about them is that they're so open ended - people offer a wide range of "justifications" for their preferences. If the OP asks about specific features it tends to limit the discussion somewhat.
I'm often struck when people list my negative impressions as the things they like - it both reminds me that there's no right way to play and (occasionally) makes me rethink something.

I get the vibe of "...alright you plebes, since my time is obviously much more important than yours, you need to do all the leg work and give me a TL;DR version of why you all play this game/class that's convincing enough for a superior gamer like myself to lower my standards to play with you all. And someone make me a sandwich."

I less get that impression and more, "I don't know what this is, but I'm not able to figure the appeal. I'm trying to be open-minded and failing - so... can I be convinced?" on several, while, others, as Ivan noted, are sincere, "I don't know this stuff - can anyone who's already knowledgeable tell me about it?"
Of course, I rarely turn down a sandwich freely offered, so there's that...

I'm holding your imagination hostage. If you don't start finding "sell me" threads to be great, I'll give your imagination to a politician.

I think most of them do. I've seen this trend before. It'll come around again in about a decade or so. It's usually just people who are doubtful and not convinced, but looking for a reason to be convinced.

Absolutely, "Sell me..." can mean something. "Sell me" can mean "There's something I want. This product might provide it. Tell me what you like so much about this product, and if it's something similar to what I want, I'll give it a try. If the product's appeal is stuff I personally hate, I'll look for a different product instead."
As for the "you need to do all the leg work" bit, I think many people ENJOY talking about the things they like. That's why I post on this site, and I dare say many other people post messages on the internet for this reason. To some people, it's not work, but fun.
I mean, it's not like we're expected to do the research to answer these questions. Presumably, we already DID the research for our own sakes.

I said I got that vibe, not that it's the case in every scenario.
I think it's the chosen use of the phrase "sell me".
That is not a polite request, it is an order. The person uttering it assumes much about their position socially in relation to the rest of the people here that the order is issued to.
Perhaps "Can/Could you guys/gals explain why this game/class/book appeals to you all so much?" would be a better way to preface these conversations.
I've also had about 8 hours of sleep since Saturday at 2 am.

If seeming like a person desperate to get either 1. attention, or 2. reinforcement of an already decided opinion counts as an advantage to you, that's the only one I can think of.

Most "sell me" anything I see, are simply people looking to reinforce or validate their already made up minds.
Then again, I may simply be pessimistic as every person I've ever known to ask for advice had already made the decision and was just looking for validation.
Generally speaking that`s why I prefer to have such conversations with people I actually know because it`s easier to weigh their opinions and I may actually be swayed.
But I can see the attraction to such threads. I can have a tendency to form an opinion on something without knowing much about it. I don`t think there`s anything wrong with polling people more familiar with the subject to see if preconceptions are causing one to miss out. And in a case where a person doesn`t know anyone they can get reliable input from that`s where strangers on the internet come in.

I think the main issue with the phrase "sell me" isn't whether or not it's a request, but the tone. Or rather lack thereof in text form. Someone could ask you to sell them on something and it be a sincere and polite request, if conveyed in the proper tone. But tone is notoriously hard to convey in text, especially between relative strangers communicating in such a way. There is also a lot of regional nuances to speech that are lost if people come from different areas.
All that being said, if someone's being a jerk, then they are being a jerk.

Sell me on "Sell me on "Sell me" threads" threads.

More seriously, if I were looking for (for example) a new game system to switch to, I might ask fans of one system what is good about their system, and fans of another system what is good about theirs. So, someone could post a "sell me on pathfinder" thread on a pathfinder forum, (because that is where you are most likely to find pathfinder fans), a "sell me on GURPS" thread on a GURPS forum, and a "sell me on 4e" thread on a 4e forum. Then that person could compare what people say about different systems and use that when deciding which system to try next.
Replace "system" with anything else gaming related, and you have a reason for "sell me" threads on a gaming forum.
