Shield Champion Brawler and AC Bonus

Rules Questions

Howdy.

So i was designing a shield based guy. and looked at the Brawler archetype.

I noticed that they still have AC Bonus class feature. But.. AC bonus class feature doesn't work when using a shield..

so does it just do nothing? or did I miss something?

"AC Bonus (Ex)

At 4th level, when a brawler wears light or no armor, she gains a +1 dodge bonus to AC and CMD. This bonus increases by 1 at 9th, 13th, and 18th levels.

These bonuses to AC apply against touch attacks. She loses these bonuses while immobilized or helpless, wearing medium or heavy armor, using a shield, or carrying a medium or heavy load."

It's probably an oversight. There wasn't a lot of quality control on the archetypes in general. You'll also notice that the shield champion isn't proficient in his eponymous weapon.

Maybe these mistakes will be fixed in the next printing, but it sometimes happens that archetypes lock you out of other abilities from your class.

AC bonus on brawler I half expect to be ignored eventually, no crazy wisdom to AC stuff like monks. so it's fine really.

You get the bonus in between shield throws?

I don't get it. What do you mean he isn't proficient? It's just tower shields he can't use right?

"Weapon and Armor Proficiency: A shield champion is proficient with all simple weapons. She is also proficient with light armor, and with bucklers, light shields, and heavy shields. This replaces the brawler's weapon and armor proficiencies."

and thanks for the answers~

it'll still be useful when i've thrown my shield or if i lose it I suppose

He's proficient with shields as armor, but since he loses the close weapons group proficiency he is not proficient with shields as weapons. This is a known issue.

huh.. I'd never thought of the difference there.

I always assumed: can use a shield = also can use in combat. since shield bash etc only required you to know the shield..
I see though. since it's listed as it's own entry on martial weapons it means you need that. I see..

So since it's listed after armour etc. People assume it means as armour only? and not in general?

Well inclines me even more to take a dip I guess. Too bad I can't get slashing damage on a shield or swash would be a great dip for a dexy shield user

It's all because of an FAQ specifying that the shield proficiency doesn't give you the weapon proficiency. Apparently the QA for the book wasn't aware of that ruling.

I personally think that's an unnecessary ruling. But the devs seem to really not like shields in general.

Ah well I think my gm'll let it slide so lucky me I guess.

good to know though thanks!
