City Based Campaign

Advice

Liberty's Edge

trying to write an adventure setting dealing with the heroes working as members of the city guard. Working on a few mysteries and problems throughout the city.

I've been playing since 2nd Edition and still have access to the 3.5 Cityscape book produced by Dungeons and Dragons and the 3.5 conversion book is useful. Just wondering on advice on things that others know would work well with converting to pathfinder.

Also adding some mixed areas of quality. Such as the concept of the Silk Street, taverns & wenching a place that I figure worshiping Cayden Cailean
or Calistria would be not just pretty open but also pretty blatant in some cases.

Merchant Square, shopping area. Still not sure how evil or good to make the merchants. Might certainly have a few with under dealings of course

High Courts, The rich and 'noble' area of the city

Church Row, Area where the more lawful churches line up and create places of worship.

So far I have four adventure ideas

plotlines

1- Theft of a Church, trying to find evidence of a scoundrel that some how became the owner of [PC's chosen church]

2- Haunted Manor House, City guard dealing with ghosts? It's certainly possible that a cleric needs to city guard to protect them as they are charged with clearing out the current residents

Mysteries (side Quests)
4- Murders on Silk Street (maybe tied to the hauntings)

5- High Court Courtesans, seems ladies of good breeding or being seen more frequently courting those not in 'noble' relationships or openly cheating. With little to no reason why.

Advice on a few things to add is always welcome, or even things to add to the city that could be fun.

Still working on where in the PFS I'd like to put it as well as other cities so far haven't really called me to use them.

Sovereign Court

Cities of Golarion would be a good supplement to get, if you want to use a city already done.

Whitethrone is in my opinion an awesome urban campaign setting but well...you might not find it to your taste.

Absalom is the obvious city for an urban campaign, it got everything, considered to be the center of the world with all kind people, all religions etc...basically if you need a campaign focused on a city with everything, that's the place to go.

Grand Lodge

Absalom is a good location, lots of info on it and the city is premade so a lot less work there for ya.

So the PCs ARE the city guard? Interesting change up from the normal. I suggest looking into any adventure that takes place in Absalom and reworking that a little.

You can also toss in a few side quests of "The Adventurers messed up and unleashed something into the city, now the city guard has to clean up" type.

Contrary to my usual position let me recommend taking a gander at Eberron products, particularly things set in the city of Sharn, as they usually have a noir bent to them.

Scarab Sages

I suggest a cheap, 2nd hand copy of WoTC Waterdeep: City of Splendours for 3e/3.5 if you can find it..... the whole thing is full of ideas for city based adventures

Good suggestion. When I was really young I haunted the proceedings of a longtime (decade plus real-time) gaming group that gamed entirely in and around Waterdeep since 2E days and had transitioned to 3E. This type of focus made for a really immersive roleplay environment.

I had mentioned only Eberron previously since "mystery" is a feature of that setting and mystery is something you seem to be angling towards.

Forgotten Realms grey box..yup.. I'm so stuck in the 80s :D

Watch documentaries on ancient and medieval cities. Better than any written supplement.

Scarab Sages

The Road to Revolution AP for sure.
