Necromancy

Advice

Which class makes the best necromancer? Looking for a good mix of minions and spells. Can be arcane of divine.

Depends what you focus on in necromancy. If it's about commanding hordes of undead there was a thread about maximising the hd you can control a longer time ago. If your search-fu isngood you might just find it.
One thing certain - it wasn't a wizard. Not sure but i think oracle of bones might have ranked high reaching above 150hd worth of undead around level 15

Juju Oracles are the ones that can control a large HD of Undead, however this ability is not nearly as useful has having Command Undead (the spell) on your class spell list. I personally prefer Gravewalker Witches, since they can start controlling Undead from level 1, have both Command Undead and Animate Dead (as level 2nd and 3rd spells no less) and has an at will magic jar they can use on undead.

Gravewalker witches are my favorite arcane caster class to control undead. They get all of the necessary spells, and they get them earlier than wizards. They can start controlling undead right at level one, and have a wonderful collection of roleplay opportunities. I'm delighted to see that I'm not the only person to think so.

Juju Oracles (City of Seven Spears version, not the Faiths and Philosophies version) can animate the largest number of undead, completely dwarfing the undead pools of any other necromancer in the game. They come online moderately slowly, and they are missing out on the Command Undead spell, but they make solid choices all around.

Cruoromancer Wizards are very close to Juju oracles in their sheer number of undead controlled. They come online about as slowly, and get slightly less undead, but they have all of the requisite spells, along with the full compliment of wizard casting to help out.

Honestly, My absolute favorite class for necromancer would be a Juju Oracle, Wizard, Mystic Theurge. It has some difficulty in the lower levels, but it has a fantastic list of spells, and can has a separate pool to animate from each class, giving it an absolutely terrifying number of undead to control. It is incredibly painful to level until you get to level 6 or 7, at which point you can raise an army that will laugh in the face of virtually everything in the bestiary. You lose out on channeling to control, but with six times your caster level worth of undead from two classes, there really isn't anything to complain about.

frankly if you are going undead minions style, my favorite:

Samsaran Gravewalker witch

With Samsaran pick Mystic Past life, to get spells from the wizard spell list, so you can have all the spells that you would ever need or even spells that you wouldn't normally get as a Witch from the wizard spell list.

Cleric is good too, and hard to mess up. It doesn't quite reach the heights being described in here, but it does do the job to satisfaction.

Also, it has the distinct advantage of not having to have to have animate dead and desecrate swimming around in his limited spells known, but can prepared it on a day-to-day basis as needed, which is cool.

I'm going to risk StDrake's wrath by saying that while the wizard may not be the best necromancer from some points of view, he's the best all-rounder for a necromancy-oriented character.

i find that combining 2 classes work well

a juju oracle (at least 10 levels for bonus spell and the revolutions to get :

-bonus spell - create undead (as a 5th-level spell; juju zombies only; at 10th level (juju zombies keep thier class levels)

- the revolution - Spirit Vessels (Su): You can channel wendo spirits into lifeless bodies, reanimating them to aid you. When using the animate dead spell, you can control 6 HD worth of undead creatures per caster level rather than 4 HD. In addition, any zombies or juju zombies you create using animate dead, create undead, or similar spells possess maximum hit points.

- the revolution - Undead Servitude (Su): You gain Command Undead as a bonus feat. You can channel negative energy a number of times per day equal to 3 + your Charisma modifier, but only to use Command Undead. You can take other feats to add to this ability, such as Improved Channel, but not feats that alter this ability, such as Alignment Channel.

and at laest 3 levels(if not al lthe 5 levels) of Agent of the Grave to et :

- Inspired Necromancy (Ex)
When determining the maximum number of Hit Dice of undead he can control with spells like animate dead, a character counts his Agent of the Grave levels twice. This ability does not factor into how many undead he can create with a single casting of a spell. Thus, a cleric 7/Agent of the Grave 3 would be able to control 52 Hit Dice worth of undead with animate dead.

- Negative Energy Conduit (Ex)
At 3rd level, an Agent of the Grave bolsters undead around him. As a standard action, an Agent of the Grave manifests an aura identical to the desecrate spell, except this foul aura has a duration of 10 minutes per level. An Agent of the Grave can use this ability once per day. In addition, any undead the Agent of the Grave creates is treated as having been created within the area of a desecrate spell.

and the other nice abilities like using your cha for hp.abilty to be able to use mind effecting spells (like charm) on undead and getting a negetive energy touch that you can heal undead(or damage living) with (and later on use on yourself as you start healing by negetive energy)

a 10\5 juju oracle\agent of the grave. will count as a level 20 for the number of hd he can control and multiplay it by 6 not by 4 to get 120 hd of undead.(not to mantioned that some of them will have full hp.extra stuff fro mbeing made under desecrate and juju zombies who will keep their class levels -to be controled by comand undead )
-normal level 15 would get up to 60 hd to control.

at level 20(15+5) he will count as 25 caster level and up to 150 hd (where a 'normal" caster would have up to 80 hd)

Thanks for the info all. Some really good stuff here.

The problem with all that zza ni is that Command Undead (the spell) can easily get you orders of magnitude more HD of undead especially with extend, since it lasts days per level.
