2 people marked this as a favorite.

Note: Please do not mention any details about the items being voted on that make it possible to identify which items you're talking about. Only very vague references are allowed--the same rules apply here as in other threads on the RPGSS forums.

In the previous two years of RPG Superstar, many people have compiled personal top lists to see how well they are able to predict which items make the Top 32. To encourage people to vote more (and more responsibly), I developed a set of standardized rules for how you can calculate your mojo rating based on your 20 favorite items. Detect Mojo is not a very serious contest, so I decided to make the rules as straightforward as possible.

Read the rules here.

Before the Top 32 reveal, feel free to discuss how many items you've put on your list so far, and what qualities an item should have to make your top list.

After the Top 32 reveal, feel free to post your mojo rating in this thread, along with your list of favorites. However, do not review any of the items without the author's permission--there will be a separate thread for that sometime after the Top 32 reveal.

Maybe I'm getting jaded...but I've got 4 weak keeps, 2 solid keeps, and 1 strong keep in 440 votes and 521 unique items.

I wouldn't say you're jaded. I have only 13 keeps so far and I have seen 763 unique items.

EDIT: I'll probably fill up my remainder on adequate staves. :)

Marathon Voter Season 8

I've only gotten 3 keeps, and about 3 items that seems to always win (which will probably end up as keeps, so maybe they are weak keeps).

I've got 17 slots in my personal Top 32 filled. No keep/weak keep stuff. That's for the judges. They stay on the list until I have 32 and I see another new one that's better than one or more of them.

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 32 , Marathon Voter Season 8 aka Laik

Got all 20 slots filled - with 7 weapons, 4 armors, 3 staves, and 2 of rings/rods/shields.

The qualiies I looks for: actual gameplay usablility (includes being interesting but not everybody-needs-it powers, simple-to-remember mechanics , proper template… and market price below certain number), matching mundane, magic and flavor features ; unique or most-accurate-in-the-trend powers.

You have 12 more to go, it's top 32 not top 20 :P

Star Voter Season 6

RPGSS may be looking for 32 top items/designers, but Mikko's mojo contest in this thread asks you to pick your favorite 20 items to calculate your mojo score.

From his rules link in the OP:
"To make the task a little less arduous and because it's quite impossible to see every single item in the voting, you don't have to pick 32 items—only 20. That way it's also easier to calculate your mojo percentage."

Cheers! :)

Marathon Voter Season 8

I can't even. I think my standards are too high. Very, very little seems worthy.

But, even if I found 20, I doubt I could win this game because I would rather see boring and functional in the top than, well, than 99% of what I am seeing. An item real PCs would want to use is way better for the game than an item with a great story and concept, that, at the end of the day, becomes just another piece of merchant fodder.

I think, so far I have seen maybe 5 items that I think SHOULD win and probably a dozen or so I think WILL win.

Thats half the fun MP - Last year most people didn't even see half the top ten, so you are working from the same disadvantage as everyone else. If anyone hits 100% they are probably lying... :) I would say if you have 12 to 17 already, you are doing as good or better than most. I have about 15 that I like, and I am only marginally convinced that 5 of them might be in the top 100... let alone the top 32. Its just all for fun!

Umm.... Please see what Lady Firedove said... This is a side contest, put on by Mikko. If you want to keep a personal top 32, awesome. But for this contest (which is just for fun) your list is only 20 items, so as to make the calculation easier. (if you hit 20/20 in the top 32, you get 100%.) Easy math for a fun little contest.

Whaaaat, Anthony Adam didn't read the rules?? :P Heh, for the purpose of calculating your standardized Detect Mojo rating, only 20 items are needed as Lady Firedove and Papasteve pointed out. Of course, nothing's stopping you from picking another 12 items, but keep them separate if you want your mojo rating to be accurate.

Nah, I'm keeping a top 32, but using the top 20 of it for this. ;)

Marathon Voter Season 8

So, I decided to try this, and, even lowering my standards, I've only got 15 items, and some of them, even, are a stretch. I know I am unlikely to see every entry but if others already have a top 32 or whatever, is it random chance or just taste on my end?

Star Voter Season 6, Dedicated Voter Season 7, Marathon Voter Season 8, Marathon Voter Season 9

Being more picky will probably help you. Mikko will compare your list to the Top 32. If being picky means you get 15 that are on the list you will do better than someone who has a list of 32 and only 10 of them are Top 32.

FWIW I am not being picky, and I only have 15-20 on my list :)

If you're unable to find 20 items you deem Top 32-worthy, see if you can find items that you think are at least popular with the voters. Last year and in 2013, the round 1 judges posted a list of 89 (in 2013) and 100 (in 2014) items from which they chose the Top 32. If they post such a list again this year, each of those items are worth +2% as per the scoring system.

26 keepers, going to be hard to chose just 20.

Marathon Voter Season 8

Man, I must be really picky. I have 10 items so far (1 staff, 1 shield, 2 rings, 1 armor, and 5 weapons). I know I didn't start my list until after star voter, but I just haven't seen a whole lot that really gets me excited and think superstar. I'm not saying there aren't a lot of good items, just few that really make me amazed. And I guess really I only have 9, since I included my own item which probably isn't superstar either, but you have to believe in yourself, right?

Marathon Voter Season 8

I have 16, but a few are borderline. 1 Armor, 4 Rings, 2 Rods, 1 Staff (though I bet it's not the Staff people are thinking of), and 7 Weapons.

I am obviously, hopefully, keeping my own in there.

Just a reminder to everyone who compiled a Top-something list: Remember to trim it down to 20 (post-cull) items so you can calculate your mojo rating!

I wish to interview some of the people with the highest mojo ratings (maybe a Top 3, depends on how many people participate), but to make sure the ratings are equitable, please send your list of 20 items to ContestASFH@gmail.com so that an impartial judge can go through your list and calculate your rating.

In your message, please include either your legal name, your messageboard name, or an alias you want to go by. I'll only post the names and ratings of the Top 3 publicly, so if your mojo sensors still needs some calibrating, don't worry, no-one will know your rating unless you post it here yourself.

If you don't want to be interviewed, you don't have to do anything just yet! Just wait until the reveal, then post your rating here in this thread.

Please note, the email address won't be monitored prior to the Top 32 reveal. So if you have any questions, please ask them here!

Some 29 items on my keep list. 8 or 10 got culled. I like my chances.
Despite having failed mojo 7.5 times in a now. :)

29 - 8 = 21

Now you only have to remove one item from your list and you're ready. ;)

Dedicated Voter Season 8, Marathon Voter Season 9

Okay, so did you all keep track of every item as you voted? Or what?

I didn't keep any list at all.

Dedicated Voter Season 8, Marathon Voter Season 9

Answered my own question, never mind.

Liberty's Edge

Note that the mojo rating will be directly linked to the number of items a voter actually saw. If I saw none of the top 32 items in the pairings I had to vote on, my mojo rating will end up zero due only to the luck of the algorithm ;-)

Marathon voters and higher will likely end up with a better mojo rating because they saw all the items (or nearly so).

Liberty's Edge

As will those who voted post-cull ;-)

I don't know about that. I have some items on my list that won't make Top 32, but they are special to me anyway and made my list.

I'm aware. As stated in the contest announcement, "The point of the contest is to encourage fans of RPG Superstar to vote tirelessly but also to vote responsibly instead of just clicking away without thinking."

Yes, those who voted more probably have slightly higher ratings, on average. As will those who spent some time analyzing the items they saw.

I doubt anyone will get 0%. Remember, you also get points for items that nearly made it -- last year a list of "Top 100" items was posted some time after the Top 32 reveal -- I hope they'll do that this year too.

Anyone who hit Star Voter or Dedicated Voter probably saw at least a few Top 32 items, and Marathon Voters probably saw more than a dozen of them.

Also, Detect Mojo is not a very serious contest. No reason to worry about your rating too much. :-)

I actually just checked my 2013 favorites list; out of my 17 favorites, 8 made the top 32. Three more made the "top 89". That'd be 46%. And I was only a Dedicated Voter that year.

Last year I would have gotten 45%, and I was a Marathon Voter. (Only 5 of my top 20 items made the top 32, but I had 10 top 100 items on my list.)

So, I'd say it shouldn't be hard to score 40% or higher even if you're "just" a Dedicated Voter, and actually, it seems my score was lower last year when I voted more. Perhaps I hurried too much. ;-)
