Tontelizi Proposal

Pathfinder Adventure Card Society

I don't know if anyone is interested in a bunch of "Character X would be better if…" threads starting up all over the place, but Theryon started it! (By the way, I think his Tarlin idea has merit, thematically and mechanically.)

If proposals are being entertained, I'd like to humbly submit that Tontelizi's Cards List could use a bit of rearranging. His Legbreaker role is all amazing things to do with allies, but he can only ever have a maximum of 3 in his deck. As you gain card feats and his deck grows, you get diminishing returns on the power feats you select.

What if one or two Ally card feats were added to his Cards List, pulling from, well, any of the other four card types he can take? Starting with still 2 seems fine -- he has to build his "gang" -- but I can't help thinking you'd get a lot more mileage out of his Legbreaker powers if that could grow to 4 or 5 over time.

Thoughts?

On a side note, yes it is my fault. And even if they (the designers) don't make changes to the current characters, at least they understand that we're not really happy with everything that's been released so far. So as new class decks are released, we want characters and roles that fit the cards they put in the class deck.

I remember someone else being disappointed with Tontelizi's build, specifically the lack of allies for the legbreaker role. That does seem strange - and I am actually a big fan of Tontelizi mechanically and thematically.

Maybe the idea is you focus on acquiring allies during the scenario to then use their powers? Although most locations have only 1 or 2 allies each.

One less weapon and armor and two more allies would make a huge difference.

Here's the thread I was thinking of.

The 3 armour particularly is strange - we've reached the end of adventure 2 of OP, and he's still carrying around chainmail, as you generally want to upgrade something other than armour (he does have SOME improved armour)

I don't play OP (yet), but if I'm importing Tontelizi to S&S or Runelords I would almost surely want to play legbreaker, and maybe I give a long hard thought to just customizing him. Reluctant to do that though because I dont know what the thinking was behind this build, there may be a balance issue there (perhaps the discard ally to add one die to a monster or barrier is considered too powerful if hes stacked with allies?). Would love to hear from Mike or Tanis on this little dude.

This is part of the reason why I'd love Tanis to do the blog posts about the ideas and history behind the various (non-Iconic) characters in the Class Decks.

Yeah, that was me, too. But the discussion quickly derailed to the merits of theoretical armour that doesn't exist, so Theryon's proposal thread gave me an excuse to bring up the salient point again. (Thanks for that!)

Add my voice to the chorus (or maybe it's still a barbershop quartet at this point) that would be interested in hearing about the design process behind this guy.

Absent official errata (which seems unlikely, given that as-is, there is nothing broken about how Tontelizi functions, merely some irritating non-synergy between character and card list, ala our necromancer wizard with two armors), Legbreaker-Tontelizi will have to fall into the category of characters (like Ranzak) that work best with a fully-party-hydra-level-cooperative group.

That is, his powers work just fine, he just isn't self-sufficient. As long as you have other party members who are content to hand off allies (and have sufficiently many to do so) at a regular clip, he can make use of his powers just as much (more, even) as he would with a modified card list, but lacking other party members with allies to spare.
