Savage Worlds Action Horror Game

Recruitment

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I'm looking to add a couple players to my Savage Worlds action/horror game. The details of the game can be found here:

Patriot, Inc.

New players will start off as Seasoned Wild Cards with $3,000 worth of gear, a free smart phone and a vehicle.

This is an action adventure game with horror elements tossed in. I'm looking to evoke a Buffy/Supernatural tone here. If that interests you please have a look at the game. If you are unsure about the Savage Worlds system I have a few veteran players who along with myself will be happy to show you the ropes.

I am interested. [This is the player of Arabella in Keltica campaign.] Give me some time to look over the gameplay and figure out a character that will fit well with the group. Should I post questions about the character creation limits here or in the game's discussion board? Thanks.

I noticed you mentioned the Savage Worlds Horror Companion. Is this a must-have, a may-have, or a must-not-have?

How does magic work in your game?

Also, let me know if there is something missing from the group. I'll be comparing the character's strength and weaknesses to get my own sense of gaps, but if there's something you know that cries out, [and it's not something we will be trying to kill], let me know.

Clebsch73 - The Horror Companion is fun to have, but not strictly speaking necessary. I'll be using it as a reference and for monsters and stats. But I'll clarify any sticking points in the Discussion tab. If you want to know how much silver bullets cost, for example, just ask and I'll tell you.

I will say that it's not a bad read though. And it's got some cool monsters. Xenomorphs anyone?

Nohwear - The Arcane Backgrounds Weird Science, Psionics and Super Powers won't be available. But Magic or Miracles are fine. You can also do some ritualized magic using the knowledge (occult) skill.

For example, a couple of my players used a ritual to banish a demon, while zombies were banging down a door, trying to get in and eat them. They made occult rolls for the ritual as part of a dramatic task, while the other players barricaded the door.

Generally speaking, I don't really worry about party balance. And I worry about it even less so in a system like Savage Worlds where there aren't traditional classes. Just try to come up with a concept that would be fun, and I'll handle the rest.

Is the familiar edge allowed?

Sure. Sounds like it could be cool.

First Draft of proposed character.

See Profile for build.

It looks great!

Thanks. I'll tweak it over the next few days. I'd like to see if she could put together special shotgun shells with a mixture of lead, silver, cold iron, and ultraviolet, so if she's dealing with something that might require special materials to hit, she's got most bases covered. I assume damage would be reduced if only one type of material does damage. She might also want some shot-gun slugs made from special materials, so if she knows what will harm a monster, she can concentrate the damage. She's got some money left after buying her basic collection of weapons, so we can work out the cost, assuming the materials are available.

I'm also curious what the laws are about carrying a katana in public. I'll do a few Google searches to see what I can find. I hope she can function as a kind of all-around vehicle jockey, so in case you want to get into a car or boat chase, she can deliver. Otherwise, I figure she'll be a combination of muscle and weapons person, versatile enough to deal with a lot of situations.

If she has money left-over, I'd be interested in things she might do to improve the performance of her car. I'll make my next post to the discussion board if that's okay. Let me know if you have something special in mind to introduce her to the group or if she just gets introduced by Maggie at the next meeting.

Will there be any mechanical effects for a blood based trapping?

Hey Raygun... Don't know if you're familiar with "Apocalypse Prevention Inc". It's a Savage Worlds powered game, that pretty much does what we're doing?

Would I have to pay for an ereader that contains my library. If so, how much?

Nohwear - Your average smart phone - which players get for free -- should be able to handle something like that without a problem. Mechanically you would do a smarts (investigation) check to find information on it.

Arlo - Hadn't heard of it before, but it looks pretty cool. Have you read it?

Well, Faith is already posting.

Nohwear, if you want to join, make a character concept and I'll help you out with anything else you need.

Sorry about the delay in checking in again. Thanksgiving sucked up my time. In a good way, admittedly, but still.

My concept is a 90 pound nerd with either seizures or sever food allergies who is constant playing with his smart phone. Except he is an accomplished mage. His companion dog is his familiar. And his smart phone has his occult library. I like the idea that his magic has a bloody trapping.

Interesting concept.

I, too, have been delayed by Thanksgiving and the rush "leading up thereto." I hope to get Nate squared and vignette written this weekend.

By bloody trapping, do you mean like stigmata?

Not quite the direction is was thinking. More like gory viscera. For example, when he summons something it seems to emerge from a bloody wound.

Are you allowing PCs to be affected by leadership feats? I am thinking of taking few spells. However I am good at commanding my summon.

The big obstacle I am facing right now, is I have no idea what to spend money on. Is there any way to buy books of ritual components that will grant game mechanic bonuses?

I am allowing players to choose a magic item. Essentially, they describe it, and I'll come up with the mechanics for it. There really isn't a whole lot to buy in the Savage Worlds Deluxe. Although, some Savage Settings have rules for that.

So what you're thinking of is similar in effect to say Blood Magic from Dragon Age. Stab your hand and something happen? I won't penalize you with wounds for that, unless you describe something particularly visceral.

That being said, I can see a few downsides to constantly smelling like blood in a horror game. :-)

You'll still need to decide whether your arcane background is Magic or Miracles though. But beyond that I don't have any particular objection to how you choose to express it.

This is Nohwear. I like to work on chars a bit at a time.

Let me know if I am missing any mechanics, please.

We won't be using Guts as a skill. Those will be handled through Spirit checks instead. So you can take those two points and assign them somewhere else. But other than that it looks fine.

Oh, and I meant to mention to feel free to dot the game play thread.
