Improved Familiars and character classes.

Advice

A debate I've been having with my players lately is this: Should a PC wizard's improved familiar (Pseudodragon, Imp, etc) be allowed to take character classes?

Ever since

Spoiler:
confronting Grimcrak (Quasit rogue/assassin familiar) from Wrath of the Righteous
it has been a subject that came back often. Basically having the same rules for familiars apply but allowing an evolution to the creature.

Would this make the familiar too strong or should it be allowed to make it more useful? I'd like to hear peoples opinion on this.

I would allow it if the PC in question took the Leadership feat and counted it as his cohort. That said it would usually be more beneficial to just take Leadership and get a cohort of the same race as the familiar. You can get up to some shenanigans this way so keep an eye on it if you do allow it.
