How much does your AC increase?

Advice

Does one's base AC increase per level or every other level? Or do you calculate it at first level (con mod + armor bonus and other bonuses) and have to stick with that?

Your base AC is always going to be 10 and then you add on your dexterity bonus that your armor allows through, armor, shield, any deflection bonuses, any natural armor bonuses, dodge bonuses, etc etc. The only types of AC that stacks with itself is dodge (iirc).

I'm fairly certain that your base AC of 10 never increases with level. It's going to be the same at level 1 as it is at level 20.

Your con mod doesn't factor into AC. It's your Dex that factors as well as Wis or Cha if you have certain classes selected.

Your AC is not affected by the con mod at all and it does not automatically increase by level unless you have a class like the monk that gets automatic increases to AC. If you want to increase your AC you have to buy equipment and/or cast spells.

Base AC is 10

Okay so, I am making a 13th level human fighter. Right now My AC is 21 (10 + 2 for Dex Mod + 9 for full plate armor). This seems a little weak for a 13th level fighter. What would be some eupiment to buy using ONLY the CRB and APG? This build is a two handed fighter; he will be weilding a greatsword.

Magic armor (plus 3, perhaps), Amulet of Natural Armor, Ring of Deflection.
Jingasa of the Fortunate Soldier is good, but I forget the source.

You can also get a magic buckler or one of those magical animated shields.

On my phone, otherwise I'd link

I'd hope by 13th level you had some kind of magic armor that would provide a few points of enhancement bonus to the full plate's armor bonus. The usual approach beyond that is to add a ring of protection and maybe a belt of physical might or belt of physical perfection in lieu of the usual belt of giant strength.

Apart from equipment, there's the Dodge feat and buffs from your allies' spells or effect, potions, and other temporary bonuses. It can get very high with some effort.

Edit: Forgot about the amulet of natural armor. That.

Two handed weapon fighters don't have high AC, but your armor should at be enhanced. I would say +3 pushing your AC to 24. You should also have a ring of protection +2 and amulet of natural armor +2

That brings you up to a 28.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

15+your level is the very least AC you should have to melee.
