BGG: why different type of ranking for RotR and SS???

Pathfinder Adventure Card Game General Discussion

Hi,

RotR is ranked in BGG in "thematic"

And

SS is ranked in "customizable"...

Why is there a difference? Same game concept right?

Gameplay-wise, they are the same game (with a few small tweaks here and there). Paizo doesn't control what BGG puts on their site, so you'd have to bring it up there to have it changed.

With SS you get the option to add cards from any class deck you have. I guess that is customizable part.

Though of course you can do that with rise of the runelords as well the option was not there when the game came out at first.

I think paizo does the configuration of its game page at BGG, right?

I just thought Rotr and SS would be in the same sub-ranking but they are not...

The types you speak of are subdomains, and are voted on by the users. Both products have Customizable Games and Thematic Games as their top two categories, but since RotR has nearly 15x as many votes as S&S, the votes should probably not be compared.

Furthermore, I suspect a number of the RotR votes came prior to actual plays, based solely on its approximation of an RPG, thus explaining why Thematic (which it really isn't) is the leading category. Just an opinion on the matter, though.

We have nothing to do with it.

Wow... I thought every game designer could use their board game homepage at Bgg as their own plattform ... Interesting...

Not even a little.

Each game page is much more like a wiki than an official page. Any regular member of BGG can make 'corrections' to the page, but those edits must be checked and accepted by a moderator/admin of BGG.

So while they do tend to be mostly accurate, some things are still up to interpretation of the general public, and because the general public can make those changes, sometimes things are different.

Most of the RotR adventure decks were originally labeled as 1-4 players, even though they're all 1-6 (the base sets are the only things that are 1-4). I was able to go in and request that correction.

RotR was a HUGE success.... Million of copies were sold worldwide...

Now every happy RotR gamer is a waiting its successor (SS) and is checking on a daily basis the RotR game ranking list, namely "Thematic"... But SS never appears in this "Thematic" list but in a completely different one.... None of the happy RotR gamer ever finds out and is unable to buy SS...

Just rank it in the SAME sub-category and you will make MORE money...

This is just an free of charge advise from a happy German RotR gamer.

Keep the dice rolling ;-)

If they had any control, I'm sure they would. BGG is its own entity, and everything is determined by the users there. Game producers and publishers have no more control over the content than you or I.

I am sure that there is some contact. Or dont you know MMM at BGG?

I don't think it being in a different category has any effect whatsoever at BGG. You can find it either way quite easily, and there is a search bar for games that I (and everyone else I know) uses. Fans of the series will be able to find the game regardless of what category it is listed in. By your argument (that people can't find the new set because it's not in thematic), you're actually opening up the game to a larger group theoretically (since you have people searching customizable as well and finding the game). Plus the two games are cross-listed on BGG, so it is easy to find them both. This is a non-issue, and one certainly beyond the control of BGG at that. If it bothers you, you should petition for a change over at BGG.

I am just trying to optimize PACG from a consumer standpoint ...

... And bringing curious things to discussion here...

I don't think whether the game is categorized as thematic or customizable affects us as consumers whatsoever. It doesn't affect the functionality of the game, and it doesn't affect the fan base at all either.

Also, just a side note concerning this, the subdomain on BGG is chosen by a poll. That means people vote on what they believe it is.

PACG has considerably less story path compared to other Thematic Games (the scenario/adventure/location cards have a basic description and some story), and I feel that was kind of necessary in order to condense the RPG experience into a card-based game type. However, it has has set card releases over time that aren't randomized and the deck building is made from those cards, and Customizable Games pointedly mentions LCG (Living Card Games), which are exactly that.

As of this post, 2/8 people have voted Thematic compared to the 6/8 that have voted Customizable. Once the game gets more voters (RotR has 117 as of this post), that could change and the game could be categorized as Thematic, but as of right now, the people feel it should be Customizable.

The designers/publishers/editors/etc have no control whatsoever on what the general public votes a game is aside from specifically trying to influence the vote.

It's all user input as Firedale said

Well, then lets ALL vote "thematic" for Skulls&Shackles on BGG so both adventure paths are in the same ranking list...

Please! Lets do it as a community :-)
