Torches and catching on fire

I've always played that getting hit by a torch exposes one to the rules of catching on fire (DC 15 reflex to avoid).

Is this correct?

It seems extreme, unless the victim is covered in oil or such.

I'd have to go with shroud on this one. I mean it leaves it open for the torch to become a much more powerful item than intended at that point, I'm thinking. Also, possibly eliminating covering something in a flammable liquid? It is an interesting thought, though.

Yeah, after having done it last week to a PC, I got to thinking it was rather extreme.

I think I've decided to say that the goblin pyros had some device like a holy water sprinkler rigged that would spread burning oil. By making it an improvised device with a good chance of exploding in the user's hands, I should be able to prevent most players from wanting to wield one. <g>

Of course, you could just throw an oil flask on your target, and *then* go in with the burning torch.

I wouldn't have a hit from a torch as a club catch you on fire.

However, I would house rule that if you spent a standard action (that provokes) with a touch attack to hold the flames on someone to deal only the fire damage, then I would allow the dc 15 reflex save or catch on fire.

This reminds me of Aragorn fighting the Nazguls on top of the tower in the 1st movie where he just touches the wraiths with a torch and catch fire. Like they had kerosene soaked, gasoline sprayed oily cloaks made out of flash paper.
Ridiculous

Yes, but if it's *cinematic* enough, it's golden.

Speaking of gold, it certainly wasn't any sillier than pouring a 50-foot semi-molten dwarf statue on Smaug. heh.

But that would be just slightly off topic.
