IR Barbarian, Daring Cavalier, or Bloodrager for RotRL / Reign of Winter

Advice

Grand Lodge

My gaming group is about to start up with RotRL or Reign of Winter here in a few weeks and I'd like to get some help sussing out my character.

IMPORTANT!!!: No Spoilers please, I haven't played either Adventure Path.

I am looking at:
- A Human Invulerable Rager with the Spell-sunder line (over beast totem)
- An Order of the Flame Daring Cavalier (could work as the party face and major DPR)
- Arcane Bloodline Bloodrager.

I tend to enjoy smashy types more than casting but I figure that the Bloodrager has alot to offer and should be considered.

I have no idea on party composition yet and if you can think of another martial class that would work well/best in either of these campaigns I would appreciate the help.

Personally, I'm dying to play an Arcane Bloodline Bloodrager. With the Primalist archetype, you can even use it to muscle in on the Barbarian's territory. ;)

Grand Lodge

Yeah I figured arcane bloodrager would be fun. I'm just wondering if it's actually fun.

Currently playing an Order of the Flame Sword Saint in RoW myself. A cav would be useful, as long as a) your DM interprets the Order of the Flame CFs like Foolhardy Rush apply to your mount's movement while you're mounted, and b) you manage to get a way to charge through difficult terrain.

@LeesusFreak, I would be rolling up a Daring Champion Cavalier if I went with the Cavalier over the Barbarian, so no mount, just swashbuckly-goodness.

How do you think a Fated Champion Skald would function in either of these campaigns? Are skalds only idea with alot of martial characters in the party?

My recommendation would absolutely be the Human Invulnerable Rager. Technically it would be the Human Invulnerable Rager & Urban Barbarian with Cold Resistance, a dip in Unbreakable Fighter and then the Stalwart line. I say that because that's exactly what I played through the entirety of Rise of the Runelords and its what I played through the first two books of Reign of Winter before that campaign got aborted.

There's a particular build - or at least build framework - that I recommend, one that allows you to settle in with a comfortable DR 12/- by 12th level and DR 20/- by 16th. He's the baddest tank I've ever made or played.

Let me know if I can be of any assistance if you decide to go this route.

Skalds definitely benefit the most from having a bunch of other martials in the party. Thematically, Skalds are great for RoW, your adventures take you all over the realms, with much less crammed dungeons than most APs. For RotR, its a much more classic affair with crammed dungeons, and you largely stay in a single region (so making friends with the town is super important)

For RoW, I had also considered a Dunescarred Drifter (Dune Rider) Cavalier with 3 levels of Trench gunner and have him basically as a 'Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court' kind of deal.

He would have been a young cavalry rider under the Bull Moose himself, Teddy Roosevelt, during the Mexican-American War but was gated into Golerion by an apprentice wizard who was messing with magic that was way beyond his ability.

@Wiggz Did you build your barbarian for dex or strength? I ask because of the Urban Barbarian part.

Strength. The Urban Barbarian aspect is to grant additional versatility when needed, to save you the AC penalty and to keep you from falling victim to the fool's gold of standard Rage's 'bonus' hit points. It is an optional aspect of the build though, and dropping it opens up some other options.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

K, the gm decided on RoW.

I know its not super optimal but what do you guys think of my Connecticut Yankee cowboy idea? Would it work in the campaign? Ranged+horse?

spellscar drifter. AKA the cowboy

Meh, it will work, but you won't get any shiny guns till very late in the AP. Not gonna spoil that, although by being on these forums at all you might know the surprise.

Doing a cav with a mount though is great, there are a bunch of cold-themed special critters for you to ride around on, and especially if you go small.

I messaged the GM my character concept he loved it and said I could pick either a revolver or a peperbox rifle (lever gun) to start with because of the idea (and the promise of a multi page back story).

I figured I could make him a bit of a switch hitter with weapon finesse

Edit: I can still wiggle my way into something more fitting but I think the character sounds like a lot of fun. Right now I'm thinking a good back up would be a skald with superstition and witch hunter.

London Duke, that idea sounds cool. I am always trying to sneak characters from other genres, particularly western, into fantasy games.
