I don't think he's unhinged at all. He sees something that looks "cool" and posts it -- I don't think he's trying to sell you on its accuracy or anything.

Physicists have known how to make gold for decades, unfortunately it costs more to make it than it is worth by a big factor.
You can also get gold from seawater, but the same problem exists.
I don't think that this story counts as fake.
