Hello,

What does the elven arcanist favored class bonus give a character? Does it give the arcanist +1 to maximum and strarting arcane reservoir? Or just to maximum?
If it is the former, then the halfing favored class bonus is utterly underwhelming by comparison.

I would interpret it as being the points in your pool, not the maximum. Since it just says to add 1 point to the points in your pool, nothing about increasing your maximum.

Also, did you mean the Gnome class bonus, since the halfling one has nothing to do with the arcane reservoir?

Yes I did. I can't seem to tell the short races apart.

I think the keyword here is "total". Elf FC bonus says:

Quote:
Increase total number of points in the arcanist's arcane reservoir by 1.

The description of the Arcane Reservoir in ACG is:

Quote:
The arcane reservoir can never hold more points than the maximum amount noted above; points gained in excess of this total are lost

Besides, being able to add a whole reservoir point each level would be insanely powerful compared to all other FC-bonuses I've seen.

That being said, the Extra Reservoir feat seems slightly overpowered, since it give 3 extra points in your reservoir (and max), while every other extra pool point feat gives two.
Are the points in an arcanist's pool worth less than a point in a magus's pool?

Yep. Depending on what you're doing you may have to spend a lot of points. Some things have costs of "spell level" or "spell level + 1" depending on the ability being used.

After looking at the other races, it probably could mean "maximum" for more balance, and if so it looks like they just may have used the wrong wording.

I can see the interpretation to mean both starting and/or maximum, but that is definitely more powerful than the other racial favorite class bonuses. It is like being able to get an "Extra Reservoir" feat every 3 levels, but you would get the bonuses incrementally at every level.

Of course that doesn't mean they didn't design it that way. Some races seem more attuned for certain class types than others. I could see the argument both ways. The key thing I noticed is it says "Increase total number of points IN the arcanist's arcane reservoir by 1." It doesn't say "total maximum of".

It's a personal call and until we hear otherwise, I recommend just playing it conservative as it won't hurt you at all if you do and if it turns out we get an answer to the contrary, you can just adjust then.

I listed the different racial bonuses below for ease of reference:

PFS Legal Dwarf (Advanced Class Guide pg. 69): Add 1/4 to the arcanist’s effective class level when determining the effects of the arcane barrier and arcane weapon arcanist exploits.
PFS Legal Elf (Advanced Class Guide pg. 69): Increase total number of points in the arcanist’s arcane reservoir by 1.
PFS Legal Gnome (Advanced Class Guide pg. 70): Add 1/6 to the number of points the arcanist gains in her arcane reservoir each day.
PFS Legal Half-Elf (Advanced Class Guide pg. 70): When casting arcanist enchantment spells, add 1/3 to the effective caster level, but only for the purpose of determining duration.
PFS Legal Halfling (Advanced Class Guide pg. 70): Gain 1/6 of a new arcanist exploit.
PFS Legal Half-Orc (Advanced Class Guide pg. 71): Gain a +1 bonus on concentration checks made due to taking damage while casting arcanist spells.
PFS Legal Human (Advanced Class Guide pg. 71): Add one spell from the arcanist spell list to the arcanist’s spellbook. The spell must be at least 1 spell level below the highest level the arcanist can cast.
