[PFS] Species Enemy Choice

Advice

Grand Lodge RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16

I am wondering what the best choice for a species enemy is for PFS. I am a playing a Sorcerer/Ranger who will split to DD prestige at level 6. I will most likely have no more than 2 levels in Ranger, so the species enemy ability is really just a bonus. I thought about the Guide Archtype which gives me more flexibility for targets but only gets me one use per session most times, so that didn't really appeal to me. Also didn't appeal to me from a flavor aspect.

The character is an active worshiper of Apsu and he venerates Gold Dragons. I was trying to think of an enemy of Apsu or Gold dragons as that would be very appropriate for the character. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Scarab Sages

Human is the most common enemy you will encounter in PFS. Mechanically, it will be the best option.

If you want to trade out Favored Enemy, Freebooter is good and it available all day, but it may not fit your flavor.

A better option might be to take Slayer instead of Ranger. You loose access to ranger wands, but Studied Target is better than Favored Enemy by far.

is Slayer an archtype and if so where is it from?

Slayer is a class from ACG.

Guide is good - the versatility is frankly more interesting than just having Humans (which would be far and away the most common).

Yeah I am not choosing humans. To be quite honest Slayer sounded interesting. The only real reason I am picking up any Ranger is for the combat style. If I could go straight sorcerer to DD and still effectively use my claws at later levels I would do so.

I will take a look at slayer and see what it has to offer. Thanks for the advice!

Scarab Sages

You should also take a look at the Eldritch Scrapper Sorcerer. It has some features that would make melee more attractive to you.

Have you considered a Draconic Bloodline Bloodrager going into Dragon Disciple?

I am already a 3rd level sorcerer with the Draconic Bloodline. The character was made a long time ago with the intent of going Dragon Disciple once all of the qualifications were met. Following Osterik's DD guide I was looking to go Beast/Caster. So the breakdown would be:

Sorcerer 3/Ranger 2/Dragon Disciple 1-7. I just picked up 4th level so now is the time for me to branch out to the melee classes if I am going to do so before going dedicated Dragon Disciple. I was looking at ranger for the Natural Weapons Combat style which will give permanent claws and allows me to take the natural weapon feats.

If this wasn't a PFS character I would go Sorcerer 1/Ranger 2/MoMS 2/Dragon Disciple 1-10 for the Dragon Style Feat/Natural Weapon combo or Bloodrager to Dragon Disciple; however it is an existing PFS character so that forces me a little bit.

I am assuming if I go Slayer and choose Ranger Combat Style as my 2nd level slayer talent, it is the same as if I were a Ranger. This will allow me to pick up Aspect of the Beast as well as Improved Natural weapon and that progression of feats. The Slayer's Favored Target ability is a better "bonus" than the Guide Archtype I was looking at as well as better for my purposes than a Favored Enemy, unless someone can suggest a favorite or despised enemy for a Gold Dragon or worshiper of Apsu. I guess I could pick Chromatic Dragons but that really seems cliche AND really will serve no function in PFS games.

Do the Favored Enemy Feats/Traits work with the Slayer's Favored Target ability?

Liberty's Edge

Human are most common but feel boring to me.

Undead are pretty darn common and everyone like some help dealing with them.

Demons and devils have been pretty common recently, but are rumored to be less so this season. Might suggest devil since they are otherwise immune to your gold dragon fire damage. So a little assist in dealing with them.

Evil dragon is thematic but almost never encountered. Only twice for me so far with all 6 characters.

Half-orc thugs seem fairly common, but are rarely key opponents that you need help dealing with.

Guess I would suggest undead or devil for favored enemy if you are still going that route.

I think I am going to go Slayer and choose Ranger Combat Style: Natural Weapons as my 2nd Level Slayer Ability. That will enable me to pick up Aspect of the Beast as well as other goodies in the future. I am most interested in playing a Beast/Caster DD so I have some versatility. Leaning more towards the casting than melee but want to be able to pack some punch when I do need to go into combat.

I have Magical Knack Trait so caster level won't suffer as much from the dips out of Sorcerer and while my casting is limited at lower levels, once I hit DD level 2 it will become that much better.

Fey.

Humans are common, but you're just gonna roll over them anyway. But g## d~+n faeries need to die fast.

Dark Archive

Pupsocket makes an excellent point. Though scattered throughout (the same is true of monstrous humanoids and a spattering of aberrations) the scenario's, fey and certain monstrous humanoids can prove extremely time consuming or disastrous in pfs. Many times no one is prepared to really deal with them directly. These have always resulted in my most problematic and lengthy scenario's. They just don't show up that often. Aberrations tend to drop quickly but a few, like optional encounter paned of bosses are just brutal. However, as was said above, your most common foes are going to be humans, undead, evil outsiders and constructs, in that order. With the new season, feel free to reverse the last two.
