No matter what the card is, the explorer MUST make at least one of the checks to defeat or acquire (the checks listed at the upper right of the card). If, and only if, there is more than one check (look for the word "then"), you may have another character at the same location make the check.
But whomever encountered the card must make one of the checks, period.

So, you couldn't split up an "AND" check, only a "THEN" check?
I don't think there are AND checks, just OR & THEN. Here are some examples:
Example 1: OR
Wisdom
Divine
7
OR
Intelligence
Arcane
8
This requires 1 check, with 4 options: Wisdom 7, Divine 7, Intelligence 8 or Arcane 8. Only the encountering character can attempt this.
Example 2:THEN
Intelligence
Arcane
8
THEN
Dexterity
Acrobatics
12
This requires 2 checks, each with two options.
Check 1: Intelligence 8 or Arcane 8
Check 2: Dexterity 12 or Acrobatics 12
The encountering character has to attempt one of the two (first or second) and any character at the encountering character's location (including the encountering character himself) can attempt the other.
Example 3: OR & THEN
Wisdom
Divine
7
OR
Intelligence
Arcane
8
THEN
Dexterity
Acrobatics
12
So there are two checks required.
Check 1 has 4 options: Wisdom 7, Divine 7, Intelligence 8 or Arcane 8
Check 2 has 2 options: Dexterity 12 or Acrobatics 12
The encountering character has to make one of the two checks (first or second, it doesn't matter) and any character at the encountering character's location (including the encountering character himself) can attempt the other.
