I'm going to be running Shattered Star soon for a group of 6 players, and one of the characters is sort of specializing in knowledge skills and linguistics.
The character will be an archeologist of sorts. Outside of the ones listed in the Core Rulebook, are there bonus languages that I could allow him to take, without it breaking any encounters later on?
On a side note, his character idea and languages question has me thinking of this quote - "If only you spoke Hovitos". Time to watch Raiders again I think.

I'd strongly suggest Thassilonian and Azlanti. They both make a ton of sense for an archeologist (like knowing Latin and Greek) and show up in the path.
Aklo is also a contender for more Lovecraftian linguists. The various planar languages can't hurt, but I don't recall any of them playing a huge role in the path.
Also, if he takes anything really off the wall, the Asylum Stone is a great chance to throw in an encounter with people speaking any given language.
Cheers!

Maybe too late as this thread is from a couple months ago but as I've run RotRL and my group is currently doing Curse of the Crimson Throne with Second Darkness next:
I would recommend Shoanti as a possible language to pick up as well. Since they have their own, not Varisian, and from the sounds of what I'm reading you might run into them at some point or another.

Right there in Shards of Sin there is the potential for some humorous RP interaction with a local "king" of mites. Mites only speak Undercommon. Without knowing Undercommon or having Comprehend Languages, you miss out on his dialog - it's just gibberish.
The group I am DMing is almost done with Shards of Sin, so not sure about recommending any others that have not already been mentioned.
