Arcanist Archetype: Brown-Fur Transmuter

Powerful Change (Su): At 3rd level, the brown-fur
transmuter learns to harness the power of her magic to
empower her transmutations. Whenever the brown-fur
transmuter casts a transmutation spell using one of her
arcanist spell slots, she can expend 1 point from her arcane
reservoir as a free action to bolster the spell. If the spell
grants a bonus to an ability score, the bonus then increases
by 2. If it grants a bonus to more than one ability score,
only one of the ability scores gains this bonus. The brownfur
transmuter cannot expend more than 1 point from
her arcane reservoir in this way. This ability replaces the
arcanist exploit gained at 3rd level.

Does this work with Enlarge Person and Reduce Person?

Argument for: The spell entries themselves say that the target is granted a size bonus to an ability score, therefore Powerful Change kicks in and increases the amount right?

or

Argument against: The spell itself isn't granting the ability scores, they are instead a byproduct of the size change, since all "scaling" sizes of monsters uses those same stat increases/decreases.

Wanting to hear people's thoughts on this please.

standard polymorphic rules cannot be subject to a polymorphic effect and another spell that changes size. Even if the polymorphic changes you into a creature the same size as your normal size.

Basically polymorphic effects don't work with enlarge or reduce person.

Edit reread your question yes it works as brownfur transmuted just says transmutation not poklymorph. If it didn't it wooksnt work with beastsgape either as those are also size bobuses.

Another point towards yes: Enlarge Person gives a strength bonus that is atypical for the size change. It is specific to the spell, not the size itself.

I would love to get clarification on this as it does not seem to be the intent of the developers, but a RAW reading would leave little room for interpretation. I am gaming Saturday, and at the moment the DM is against it.

It it a transmutation spell? YES
does the spell grant a bonus to an ability score? YES, all the bonuses that transmutation(and polymorph) spells give are size bonuses.
That meets all the requirements.

Now where is your source for knowing the intent of the developers. What do you feel the intent is supposed to be? Why is your DM against it?

Yes. this is the entire point of a brown furred transmuters. He makes you bigger/stronger than the usual run of the mill enlarge person.

Agree. This is because Enlarge Person is not a polymorph effect. Note that the spell never states the bonus is from increasing in size. The bonus is simply another part of the spell.
