==Special Abilities==

Favored Enemy (Ex): At 1st level, a ranger selects a creature type from the ranger favored enemies table. He gains a +2 bonus on Bluff, Knowledge, Perception, Sense Motive, and Survival checks against creatures of his selected type. Likewise, he gets a +2 bonus on weapon attack and damage rolls against them. A ranger may make Knowledge skill checks untrained when attempting to identify these creatures.

At 5th level and every five levels thereafter (10th, 15th, and 20th level), the ranger may select an additional favored enemy. In addition, at each such interval, the bonus against any one favored enemy (including the one just selected, if so desired) increases by +2.

If the ranger chooses humanoids or outsiders as a favored enemy, he must also choose an associated subtype, as indicated on the table below. (Note that there are other types of humanoid to choose from—those called out specifically on the table below are merely the most common.) If a specific creature falls into more than one category of favored enemy, the ranger's bonuses do not stack; he simply uses whichever bonus is higher.

Track (Ex): A ranger adds half his level (minimum 1) to Survival skill checks made to follow tracks.

Wild Empathy (Ex): A ranger can improve the initial attitude of an animal. This ability functions just like a Diplomacy check to improve the attitude of a person (see Using Skills). The ranger rolls 1d20 and adds his ranger level and his Charisma bonus to determine the wild empathy check result. The typical domestic animal has a starting attitude of indifferent, while wild animals are usually unfriendly.

To use wild empathy, the ranger and the animal must be within 30 feet of one another under normal visibility conditions. Generally, influencing an animal in this way takes 1 minute, but, as with influencing people, it might take more or less time.

The ranger can also use this ability to influence a magical beast with an Intelligence score of 1 or 2, but he takes a –4 penalty on the check.

Background/Charater Concept:

Five background and concept elements important to Therie Gorget.
1) Therie doesn’t like to admit it but she enjoys combat. The adrenalin rush and fear of death make her feel more alive than during any other points in her life. She doesn’t seek out combat, but revels in it when it finds her.
2) Both of Therie’s parents were druids who had found a place to call their own near the Yerasol Archipelgo. They made frequent expeditions as skyseers with Risur ships in the area, and Therie spent a good majority of her early life on or around ships and the water. It was during the fourth Yerasol War that both of her parents perished while trying to defend their home from the oncoming Danor forces.
3) Therie’s felt that her parents were saddened by her not having the same divine connection to nature that had. Therie took to being a ranger to try and regain the pride and respect of her parents, seeking another means to connect with the natural world around her.
4) Therie has learned over the years that her ‘gut’ instincts are rarely wrong, and will follow them almost unquestionably now, even if they seem to lead her into obvious danger. She is not aware what provides her with this gut feeling but believe that it comes from the guiding spirits of her parents, who look down at her from the stars.
5) Therie frequently takes up her parents profession now as sea-faring skyseer for Captain Throst, now a naval captain in Risur’s fleet.

Two goals that are important to Therie.
1) One of her primary goals is to attune herself with the nature and the cosmos. It’s an important ideal for Therie as she feel that by attuning herself with nature and the cosmos she is getting closer to her fallen parents.
2) Therie would eventually like to reclaim her home from Danor and see it rightfully back in Risur. She feels a touch of despair everytime she thinks about her inability to visit the location where her parents frequently did their druidic rituals.

Two secrets about Therie, one that he knows, and one that he not yet aware of.
1) Therie takes any death that she feels she could have prevented extremely personally, including those done while on duty. The images of past death’s haunt her and she frequently wakes during the night, screaming from nightmares. The only time she seems to be at peace is when she is able to sleep beneath a clear night sky.
2) Unknown: One of the primary reasons why Therie doesn’t share her parents affiliation with nature is that she is adopted. She is actually the bastard child of one Flint’s nobleman, Kisar Montali. Kisar paid a local captain to relocate the child and her mother to the Yerasol archipelago. Unfortunetly her mother died of mysterious cause on route, as her father cared little for ensuring the health of a woman who in his mind would cause significantly less trouble dead. The captain of the ship, Fermin Throst, found he had a close connection with the baby, and transported her to her adopted parent’s home, where they graciously accepted her.

Four people that are tied to Therie, three are friends and one is an enemy.
1) Captain Fermin Throst – Captain of ‘Resonant’. Saved Therie’s life while she was just a baby. Frequented her parent’s cabin while she was growing up and feels an intense protective bond with Therie.
2) Astrid Janith – Therie’s closest friend, and an Engineer aboard Resonant. They became friends during one her many escaped on The Resonant and frequently are seen together whenever the ship is in dock.
3) Mr and Mrs. Gorget – Therie’s dead adopted parents. Most of Therie’s life goals revolve in some way in either trying to live in her parent’s image or living in such a way that she thinks would make them proud.
4) Enemy: Kisar Montali – Therie biological father does not know she is alive, and assumes she died along with her mother. If her blood connection to him was found out, it could ruin him. Captain Fermin is the only person who know Therie’s true identity.

Three memories, mannerisms or quirks Therie possess.
1)Life at sea could be boring at times, and curiosity got the better of her and Astrid on one of their trips. Neither of them speak about it, nor have ever repeated what happened, but they are far closer after the conclusion of that trip. Therie shrugs off the advances of other individuals almost subconsciously.
2) Therie wields her crossbow like she has seen the people in town wield pistols. She is captivated by the technology but has never had the funds or training to wield the weapon correctly. Wields light crossbow one handed.
3) On clear nights Therie will lose hours just staring at the sky and stars, and is commonly distracted by unusual sights in the night sky. Many nights have passed in quiet contemplation lying on her back staring up.

Character Role/Concept/Growth
Therie is going to pick up gunslinger at lvl 2, finally starting to learn how to wield a pistol. From there she will stay go back to Ranger and likely stay a Ranger all the way to lvl 20 (Still undecided on Applied Astronomist). Looking to pick up an animal companion at Lvl 5, will have to discuss detail about how best to do it in a way that doesn’t break character or story reality (Not a fan of stuff appearing out of nowhere, like to have reasoning behind all my leveling decisions and gains).

Feats:
Therie is going to go with the Crossbow combat Style (applied to pistols), but will be predominantly a melee combatant. Big feat for her will be gaining Opening Volley, and Shot on the run, where she will lead with a pistol shot while charging into combat. Once in melee she uses her scimitar to devastating effect. (will progress up the Critical line of feats).

Role:
Melee combatant. Though Therie is also has decent ranged capabilities.
Therie is also a very solid tracker and navigator, with points in geography, profession(sailor), and survival.

Hmm. Olmek: did you want proper alias/statblocks beyond character basics, or is that just a player preference thing? Because I'm still not sure how important crunch details are to this recruitment, but I'm definitely noticing how much nicer everyone else looks with Herolab.

I would like to see all of the crunch details for the character, please. I think HeroLab might have a way to convert the character into a Bestiary style stat block.

Would anyone like to make intertwined backgrounds? I find that I am fond of doing this as it ends up making the quality all the more than it was before. That and it is most fun coming up with all the details of knowing each other.

With that being said, here is a fairly advanced draft of the character background. Drake Morrell.

I am using Hero Lab to make the character, albeit with minor tweaks and manual additions for details that Hero Lab is unable to do. The crunch is not yet done and will come later.

GM Olmek, throw a glance my way and tell me what you think.

You are correct, there is indeed a way.

File>Output Hero Statblock>BB Code.

This will format everything in a way to be the most compatible with the Paizo forums. I use it frequently.

Don't have Hero Lab, but I've got a bit of practice whipping together aliases that group combat stats nicely, so I'll do that.

Would be happy to, except that I try not to get too attached to my characters during the initial stages of recruitment, and prefer to do this sort of thing once the party's set.

Since gnomes don't really exist in the Zeitgeist setting, could/would I be a refugee from one of the "dead" zones?

Gnomes do exist, they're just not featured in a major way in the background. You can absolutely be from the dead zones.

There are several gnomish NPCs. Flint's population is 7% gnome. :)

Okay, Thunderbeard here. got an avatar whose profile I've loaded up with stat blocks inside of spoiler tags. If you find that sort of thing distracting instead of helpful, I can get rid of the spoiler tags and make it look more like a Herolab dump.

Grand Moff Vixen, I always like to mix characters' backgrounds. It is a little more difficult when we do not even know who may or may not be chosen for the campaign. That aside though, I would be willing to work with you and anyone else who wishes too.

I have much of the crunch for Jasselle complete and I am working on her background playing with the idea(s) of starting out as a spokesperson for an up and coming politician that her mother arranged for her or working in the position working for/as a junior barrister. (Jesselle has range in perform (Oratory and Acting))

to be fair I don't use herolab. I use scoreforge. A nice free opensource option that also has the ability to output in paizoBB format.

Not everyone does. I personally chose it for the many things I can do with it, and the other systems it supports. I have the D20, Mutants and Masterminds 3e, and Fate for it (though the Fate is free of charge, sooo). It really comes in handy.

Huh, I guess I'll have to check Scoreforge out when my hard drive gets fixed so I can download software again.

GMV if you need someone to mix backgrounds with I can oblige, although it likely would have been someone you worked with during your brief tenure at RHC.

My character will be a last war veteran, scarred from the war, not too big on danorans (didnt catch your race), dockworker/sailor/brawler.

I hadn't posted the build yet which is why it probably wasn't clear. I am making a human.

And Fen and I discussed the fact that have a lot in common in terms of moral philosophy, disregard for technology and dedication to the job—if there's some sort of training program which RHC recruits go through, we may have met there and established a good working relationship.

Quite right, as two of the few people who possess similar(although used quite differently) powers and who share the same general attitude regarding technology in the world, Fen and Adrian have established a solid friendship.

I don't mind intertwining background, I prefer to also do it if/after I get selected. No sense joining if I don't get chosen :)

I am going Gnome Technoligist, master tinker racial ability. Plan to be the "I can fix anything" type :)

Guys, I think I'm going to start another thread with a more descriptive title. I'm liking the submissions and ideas I've seen from you all so far, but I'd like to get some more applicants. Everything posted here is still valid and will be considered. I'll post a link to the new thread so the conversation can continue there.

Sorry for the inconvenience!

more competition! booo!

just kidding

Heck, Tenro, at least we got to make a good first impression (seeing as we are the two best-dressed reptiles on these here forums).
