Drain damage clarification

I'm confused on what drain damage is and how it works. For example, Demon Fever caused 1d6 CON damage, target must make a second FOrt save or 1 point of the damage is drain instead.

What does the drain damage do?

Ability drain actually reduces the ability score and is harder to get rid of than ability damage.

Ability damage causes penalties to appropriate checks. Ability drain actually reduces the ability score, which can cause things like skill point loss, changes when the character dies at negative hit points, and everything else modified by the ability score.

I get it now. I was checking how Hero Lab handles ability damage and ability drain and learned that every 2 points of ability damage reduces the bonus of that ability by 1. And of course ability drain actually targets the ability score outright. Feeling stupid here that I did not recognize this before. Where in the core rules is this explained?
