weapon enchanting questions

Rules Questions

I know there have been a ton of these threads, but these are some questions that have been bothering me for quite some time about enchanting.

so lets start with the max enhancement amount. So a weapon should be able to get to +10 correct? does this mean I can have a +10 longsword? or can I have +10 worth of special abilities on it? Or is it like a split in between?

second, how exactly does adding more enhancements onto an already enchanted or magic item work exactly? what kind of costs do you pay and whatnot? do you pay the differences for putting it up to that enhancement bonus?

as a specific example, I have a 10th level assassin who has a sword of subtlety (Mythic rules are in effect and I was considering making it legendary if that changes anything)

So the sword of subtlety is a +1 shortsword with a fancy effect and requires CL 7th to create.

so lets say I want to add the bane enhancement to my sword of subtlety. what kind of costs and enhancement bonuses am I looking at? Can I not add more enhancements to it since it's a specific magic weapon?

While the maximum total enhancements of a weapon is +10, a +5 weapon is the highest you can go. So you can have a +5 weapon with a further +5 worth of special abilities, or a +1 weapon with +9 worth of special abilities. But you can't have a +6 weapon, even with no additional abilities.

You find out how much the new weapon would cost, and subtract the cost of the current weapon. You pay the difference.

Enchanting specific magic weapons is harder. Not all magic items follow the pricing formulas. Some have just been given a price that sounds right to the developers. As such, your DM will need to set a price.

alright, so there's nothing in the rules that says you specifically can't further enhance specific magic items?

There is nothing in the rules that prevents you from further enchanting specific magic items.

alright then, thank you for the help

There is nothing in the rules that prevents you from further enchanting specific magic items.

There is also nothing that specifically allows it either. Check with your GM. Generally speaking, there isn't a good reason not to allow it as long you pay the proper cost. If the specific item is a +1 with other stuff and costs 10,000 gp and you want to make it a +2 then you need to pay for the cost difference between a +1 weapon and a +2 weapon.

Though the Core Rulebook is silent, several other books that came later, such as Ultimate Equipment and Ultimate Campaign, make it absolutely clear that you can further enhance specific magical items.

They are, however, silent on how you should go about doing that. Most people assume that you simply pay the difference like with any other magical weapon or item.

Turning a +1 sword of subtlety into a +1 humanbane sword of subtlety, for example should cost you 8,000gp.

18,000gp (for +3 weapon) - 2,000gp (+1 weapon) = 16,000gp
16,000gp / 2 (for crafting it yourself) = 8,000gp

The subtlety aspect is already paid for, so we can pretty much ignore that in the above calculations.

Just be sure to keep track of the difference between weapon abilities, and UNIQUE weapon abilities though. If you were to try the same thing with a +1 keen weapon, turning it into a +1 keen humanbane weapon, the cost difference would be 12,000gp.

32,000gp (for +4 weapon) - 8,000gp (+2 weapon) = 24,000gp
24,000gp / 2 (for crafting it yourself) = 12,000gp

I hope that helps. :D

that actually helps quite a bit, thank you very much

Mind you that the total of a weapon cannot go above 200k gold. At least that is how it worked in 3.5...

That means that if you add even as much as a single unique ability then the weapon can only get up to +9 total. That is a assuming that the unique abilities on the weapon does not cost more than 38k gold (200k - 9*9*2000) in total... Otherwise it goes down to +8 and so forth.

As far as I can tell, Lifat, that rule doesn't exist in Pathfinder. Furthermore, there are multiple items that are over 200,000gp that aren't considered epic.

It wasn't items that was considered epic when price was over 200k. It was only weapons. Likewise armors were considered epic at above 100k.

But it was a 3.5 rule and I haven't seen the rule in pathfinder either so you might be right that no such rule exists in pathfinder.
