Looking 4 Help on my Gnome Oracle Heavy Caster

Advice

So, my group is preparing/talking about the next party to play in a few weeks and there is no real healing capable class, and no one seems interested in a arcane caster heavy class (Wizard, Sorcerer, etc). So I figured i'd try the Oracle and focus heavily on casting, here is how she is looking so far (roughly)...

Aurora Starbreeze

Class: Oracle
Race: Gnome (Probably get Eternal Hope alt.racial - fits with her back story)
Alignment: Lawful Good (yeah, a Gnome? Not sure I can make that work)

Stats (DM tends to make us roll so can only roughly plan this)
Str = aiming for 12 (after -2)
Dex = high as possible.
Con = high as possible.
Int = 10-12ish
Wis = weakest roll.
Cha = Highest roll.

History (work-in-progress): Princess to a long-destroyed, wealthy/advanced community of Gnomes, all murdered defending her on her wedding day from jealous human raiders. Her Oracle powers surfacing to rap her in a powerful stasis-sanctuary spell, awakening centuries after the event. Her people long forgotten, she strives to help all gnomes (and the good and weak) in the world, while ever haunted/reminded by the spirits of her long dead people.

Curse = Haunted
Mystery = Heavens:
1st) Guiding Star
3rd) Awesome Display
7th) Coat of Many Stars
11th) Mantle of Moonlight
15th) Moonlight Bridge
19th) Dweller in Darkness

Feats:
1st) Skill Focus: Knowledge (Planes)
3rd) Eldritch Heritage: Arcane
5th) Combat Casting
7th) Extend Metamagic
9th) Empower Metamagic (or Intensified)
11th) Impr.Eldritch Heritage: Arcane (Thinking spells like: Haste, Cold Ice Strike and something like Prismatic Wall)
13th) Dazing Metamagic
15th) Spell Perfection: Chain Lightning
17th) Gr.Eldritch Heritage: Arcane (+2 DC Evocation)
19th) Persistent metamagic

As you can see, heavy spellcasting (I kinda want to shock my party on how much "unlimited power" a humble Gnome Oracle-girl can be)

Anyway, any problems you can see, or maybe i'm being blinded by trying to make a kind of oracle/Sorcerer to better see better options. Any advice or input would be great;) Oh, and I haven't even considered what oracle spells to have.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

With color spray + awesome display, you want Persistent Spell at 7th level. Not 19th. It's your best move any time the enemy is close until after ~10th level and Persistent makes it better. I'm sure you can find other spells to use it on from 11th-18th level.

Eldritch heritage (arcane) ASAP but no Improved Familiar ever?

Empower/intensified don't look amazingly useful on the oracle list or the heavens mystery bonus spells. Consider Toppling or Dazing.

You don't need Haste. You can get Blessing of Fervor 3 levels earlier to serve the same purpose.

Yeah, you make a good case for Persistent Metamagic, so that at 7th level. I still think Extend Metamagic can be useful, but perhaps later at 13th level, moving Dazing metamagic - which I must admit I like the look of alot;)

No Haste (Missed Blessing of fervour), so maybe get something like Fireball to take more advantage of Metamagics, or id there a really good spell to pickup for Awesome Display that I am missing?

Thanks, hope for more inputs;)

XigXag is a a gnome Heaven's Oracle. You allies will be continually amazed by your Save-or-die power.

Definitely get Persistent Spell right after Eldritch Heritage (Arcane). Persistent Awesome Display Color Spray is very effective.

Your weak point will be undead & constructs: stuff without a will save. Also things so deadly you fear to get close enough to Color Spray them (e.g. Dragons). Have a plan for that stuff.

Make sure you give your allies a chance to shine. A Heaven's Oracle has so much firepower it's easy to leave your allies with nothing but cleanup work. That's no fun. Save your immense powers for when your allies need them and give them plenty of chance to shine.

Dunno if I'd call it really good, but Loathsome Veil is a pattern spell which handles enemies with up to 8 HD well (compared to Color Spray's 4 HD). It would help but would still become largely redundant within a couple of levels. If you could retrain the spell you get via Imp. EH it might be worth picking, otherwise you'd want something with lasting appeal.

There are quite a few 5th level sorc/wiz spells which this might apply to, Permanency or Magic Jar or Phantasmal Web spring to mind.

Most of the best lower level cleric spells have been around for many editions. Protection from Evil, Silence, Blindness/Deafness, Wind Wall. An exception is Burst of Radiance which fits your character nicely too. You don't want to waste a spell known on it in the first couple of levels but Recharge Innate Magic is more useful than you'd think.

Loathsome Veil will become XigXag's favorite spell as soon as he is able to cast 3rd level spells.

IMO Veiled Illusionist PRC is perfect for Gnome Heavens Oracle:

You can add an illusion spell from wizard/sorcerer list every prc level and you receive tons of other useful benefits as well. It has relatively painless entry requirements too.

Yes I spotted Loathsome Veil flicking through UM last night, instantly popped out as perfect for Aurora, illusion (pattern) and she'll probably be still in a modified wedding dress (thanks her history).

There don't seem to be many illusion(pattern) spells of note other than that. Scintillating Pattern is the only choice I saw, and it looked pretty bad even with Awesome Display. (Note: Burst of Radiance looks good, but my DM is a bit hesitant on things outside the Core, APG and Ultimate books).

I will have to go home and check those other spells (I think this may be where my knowledge is weakest in the clerical/oracle spells). Also what three spells to get with the Heritage has me in a fix. I wondered if Project Image might be a handy pick up.

Anyway, great advice, feeling more confident about pulling this character off;)

Don't worry about the heritage options quite yet, see how things pan out in play and pick based on what will help you most at the time. The other players characters will develop too and you'll have a better idea then.

I often write out a level by level build and never stick to it as I level in game. How much depends on build obviously. In my current 2 games I've got a wood oracle that's not changed a huge amount but my Hexcrafter in WotR is a nightmare to pre-plan - every feat could be an arcana or hex or regular feat and then there's mythic on top of that!

Since you'll be likely going for a familiar with the Arcane Bloodline Eldritch Heritage feat, maxing out your Use Magic Device and getting a familiar with prehensile hands (such as a monkey) might be an option worth looking into. That way you can effectively by having the familiar UMD with wands and such to partially make up the difference in not having two separate casters in the party. If you take this route, you'll one want of your traits to make Use Magic Device a class skill (Dangerously Curious might fit a gnome; you could flavor it as wanting to explore all possibilities of finding a way to help her people.)

Since you're doing double caster duty, look for spells that are frequently cast by both arcane and divine casters that are on the cleric spell list (Dispel Magic, for example.)

What are the other players going with, btw?

How set are you on Gnome? You would get more mileage out of Human, Half Elf or Half Orc for the extra spells known FCB. As a Half Elf you would also have Paragon Surge available which ultimately gives you access to the entire Cleric and Wizard spell list.

I would also second the Veiled Illusionist option. The Heavens revelations beyond Awesome Display are pretty weak so you lose little by doing so. You would lose out on bonus spells from the FCB and your higher level Mystery spells but after overland flight they are a bit so-so.

Gnome just fits my back story with her, half-breeds certainly wouldn't and neither would human. Originally I thought Halfling, but it soon changed to Gnome.

Probably gonna go with a the Bonded Item over a familiar tbh

Other peeps ( so they've discussed so far) are a Barbarian, Rogue and third is thinking Bard or Summoner I think, last I heard he was going more the latter.

Btw; my early level spells I am thinking so far...

Cantrips: Detect Magic, Create Water & Read magic (Beyond this I am not sure, I get a lot of bonus cantrips from Gnome & Haunted).

CL1: 1st Level) Cure Light Wounds (Believe you get "cure" spells as a auto-bonus spells as an Oracle), Bless (to be swapped out in later levels), & Shield of Faith, 3rd Level) Sanctuary, 5th level) Obscuring Mist probably.

CL2: 4th level) Cure Mod.Wounds (auto) & Lesser Restoration,
5th Level) Grace (or perhaps get this at 4th).

Anyways, thanks for the inputs, will be rolling this up in a week or 2, our current game is nearly at the end it looks;)
