There are hundreds of games over the years that I have thought were awesome and sank alot of time into but below are the ones that I find myself re-installing or finding the disk/cartrage for over and over.

Final Fantasy 4 SNES version (FF2 in the US): first RPG I ever played.

Mass Effect: entire trilogy awesome story, great characters, lots of re-playability.

Skyrim: took what I loved about oblivion and made in 10x more awesome.

Fallout 3 and New Vegas: took what I loved about oblivion and added guns, mutants, ghouls, and a post apocalyptic earth.

Castlevania SOTN: Timeless gameplay and hidden endings. Father of the Metrovania genre need I say more.

Diablo II: this game ate a few years of my life lol.

Saga Frontier. Even though I haven't played since I finally put the ps2 away at the beginning of this year, it's still my absolute favourite. I love the unstructured feel, and some of the characters. I've still never found a character I relate to as well as Asellus.

Fallout 3 & New Vegas come in a close second, both for the many options style, but 3 more for environment and story, New Vegas more for mechanics and systems.

Skyrim rounds out the top three, for open world approach, and a setting that's fun to explore, even though I really didn't care much about the main plot.

Oh, that reminds me of one I play a LOT on road trips and whatnot: SaGa 2 (Final Fantasy Legend 2), for the Gameboy Color.

Really damn fun game. I love all the different permutations of monsters you can get by eating meat.

Man I need to play the SaGa games again. I've been enjoying the soundtracks a lot recently.

Going way back in time, I would mention the Bard's Tale games from the 80's. But the best games of that era were the Ultima Series from Lord British aka Richard Garriott. I played the hell out of Ultima 4, but 5 was AMAZING for the time.

Flash forward to more recent times, and I would have to say War Craft 2, Star Craft, and age of Empires 2 all leading up to the best game ever, and one that I have lost a chunk of my life to - Rise of Nations. RTS with everything from spearmen and slingers to ICBMs and Artificial Intelligence, with all the cool machine guns, air craft, tanks and battleships as well.

Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance for PS2 had the best graphics and game play of that era. I have played through that game and the sequel several times, and they are always fun and addicting.

Special mention goes to SimCity 4 with some of the fan made add-ons. If they just remade that game with a modern interface and a few tweaks it would be incredible.

Finally, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 is the best FPS I have every played. Even Black Ops and Ghosts do not have the "combat simulator" feel of MW3. It isn't so much a game, as a conditioning tool for shooting people. Disturbing good fun.

Modern Warfare 3 is basically the worst thing in existence.

1.) No Commando Pro knife dashes.

2.) Throwing Knives slow as hell.

3.) Soldiers are apparently mentally challenged now because when I go to throw a knife from behind a shield he's all like "DURR THE SHIELD GOES 5 FEET THIS WAY RIGHT"

4.) No Commando Pro knife dashes.

5.) That g@+ d*%n shotgun that eats through everything forever with a larger clip size than some assault rifles can eat a dick.

I thought MW2 was good, arcade-y fun and Blops 2 was all right (even though I'm more of a Battlefield fan) but I couldn't find anything in MW3 that didn't frustrate or bore me.

Spoiler:
NO COMMANDO PRO KNIFE DASHES AAAAAA

Loved that game as well. I had so much fun learning how the stat leveling system worked.

I was ticked when I find out they weren't going to translate the DS remake.

I feel like we've had this exchange in another thread...

I totally suck at FPS games. But what is a commando pro knife dash? And why would you want to use one over simply shooting the guy?

That is true from a time destroying perspective, and in the sense that it trains you to shoot at people (who are often speaking in middle eastern sounding voices).

This will blow many peoples minds, and I'm sure make them think less of me, but... I don't even play it online...

I mostly just play the survival mode and missions split-screen.

Horrible right?

Any other games that are good to play split screen these days? I've been thinking of Boarderlands 2. Since I have something like 40 full days of playing time on MW3, I'm thinking it is time to give it a break for a while.

Also, for Rise of Nations, I mostly just play a "quick game" against a couple of digital opponents. What makes the game so great is that you can totally customize every aspect of the game, from difficulty to victory conditions, resources, etc.

I very much enjoy close range combat in any game, even if it's not the only option. I also very much enjoy weapons that kill in one hit, but still have that close range weakness (so I need to maneuver around the enemy and stuff to get to them). My loadout in an FPS, where selectable loadouts are possible, generally involves a Shotgun, a powerful but slow firing sidearm, and a trusty knife. Except Battlefield Bad Company 2, where it mostly involved the good ol' Carl Gustav Recoillesss Rocket Launcher because that thing was fun as hell.

In a game like Call of Duty (not really going to distinguish between them, because they're all the same in this sense), where Assault Rifles and Sniper Rifles are king, having a viable close range option is very rare. Enter Commando Pro, a perk that lets you dash from a short distance away when attacking with your knife, letting you close that tiny bit of distance to the enemy before their bullets kill you. Throwing knives also helped with this, being a somewhat longer range version.

Problem with MW3 being that Commando Pro no longer does that, and throwing knives are a LOT slower to throw and leave you wide open to a quick burst of fire from any enemy with half a brain. Meaning they go from a viable option, to a useless one. Meaning the game is once again Rifle centric.

Granted it is a mechanically superior game besides those two points, but from my unique perspective it's terrible. =)

Multi player FPS: UT and UT 2003, Quake II and III. Yes, I played both series. Religiously. Along with all the other games in those series (and the Doom series). Oh, and Battlefront 1 / 2.

Single player FPS: F.E.A.R. Loved the AI in that game and the tension. The Jedi Knight series (the Quake III engine FPS games), Unreal. Not so much Half Life (which I enjoyed but not as much).

Coop FPS: Serious Sam series, Left for Dead 2, Quake 2.

RPGs: Elder Scrolls series, Fallout III and NV, NWN series, Hexen II.

Others: Tie Fighter, Wing Commander: Privateer, M.U.L.E. ... too many good games over the years! Which is not a complaint :)

Over all, all time favorite... Hexen II I think atm... the lack of a Hexen III is disappointing (and no, Heretic II didn't make up for it - I like my atmospheric first person games).

people have said most of mine, but here of some of my all time favs that i dont see on these lists often
1.tomba 1 and 2. I have been playing these games for 10 years, and even shelled out about 120 bucks to get both of them off ebay to replace the ones i lost.
2. Banjo kazooie and tooie.
3. geist(nintendo gamecube). its stands out as a pretty unique shooter and puzzle style game.
4.mischief makers(n64). to this day I still can vividly shaking jr to transform him into blockman.
5. silicon valley(n64). always loved the concept of this game, and still to this day remember the dog and sheep couple from the beginning.

Truly love the SaGa series. I would not be here without it, it was my first roleplaying game ever.

I started rpgs as soon as I got a nes. Final Fantasy, Crystalis, Zelda, and Dragon Warrior (the one that came free with a subscription to Nintendo Power) were my introduction to the medium. I credit my vocabulary and reading comprehension in no small part to playing video games with a lot of text based dialogue. I'm glad I'm not the only one who can say video games had a positive impact on their life.

Zelda. So much so that the next campaign I plan on running will be in Hyrule with races from the series, I actually own a replica Master Sword and Hylian Shield, and when I have the extra money, will be getting the Hylian crest tattooed on my leg.

I find it hard to believe any game would train you to shoot at people.

I think someone who's had basic gun training in basic training probably is better at that than someone who's only played a game. AT least the person in basic has an idea of how to actually hold, carry, load their own weapon, and shoot properly.

I find it very hard to believe any game could teach those basics, much less more advanced gun training.

JUST my two coppers on that.

Not that I think a game that actually taught people how to kill others would ever go over that well in general (besides being found very boring and very non-arcade unentertaining for most) as far as sales and other items. IN addition, the questionable morality of such a thing probably would sink it rather quickly in the media and other arenas.

In my not so humble opinion, of course.

PS: If you liked Rise of Nations, you should try to give Empire Earth a go, if you can get it to run still on whatever OS you are running.

I literally learned to read around 3 or 4 years old watching my brother play Dragon Warrior on the NES. One day it was just symbols, the next it was words I understood.

At the moment, Mount & Blade - Warband. I've been playing the original and that one for months without getting tired of it, despite the somewhat (!) primitive graphics.

» Clive Barker's Undying

» Mass Effect 2 + all DLC
» Scratches (pre-Director's Cut)
» TES V: Skyrim + 156423156541023 mods

The US Army requires everyone to go through an EST (Engagement Skills Trainer) before actually firing on a range.

The EST is essentially PS Move or Xbox Kinect with a real firearm.

The Army has found a 100% increase in qualifications when exercising with the EST before range firing.

I'm sorry you don't like these games, but... seriously? We shouldn't mention or discuss Call of Duty games, or Battlefiled, Halo, Medal of Honor, Rainbow 6, Team Fortress, Doom, Kill Zone, or any of the other similar shooter or combat-centric games? And cluttered? I count on the order of six posts that even mention CoD or Modern Warfare.

If you can't talk about video games in a video games thread...

Baldur's Gate 1 & 2...
Tomb Raider (the first one....)
Resident Evil 1 & 2...
Silent Hill 1...
Hot Shot's Golf (the series)...

Funny thing... Ever since the Comodore 64, I've always liked playing adventure games (either the real D&D or games that immitated it) and could only dream about MMOs. I thought that the day they'd start making those, I'd never see the daylight again. To my surprise, MMO's may look incredible, but do nothing for me.

Maybe there's too many people playing at the same time, or the fact that you HAVE to play certain hours to be with your group to go kill that big boss... Or maybe just knowing that I'll never be GREAT at it (as I'll never be able to put in as many hours as true gamers can).

I keep reverting to the slow pace of the old Baldur's Gate solo games for the PC, where I cvan play when I want, then not play for two months, then pick up right where I left it.

Maybe it's the whole online thing that also kills it for me as well.

I dunno...

This is why the MMOs I play are solo friendly. I like questing, and if I can complete the quest solo, it's fun for me even if no one else is there. If they are great, but I have no desire to do raiding or the "Endgame". I think that's why CoX is still missed. I've done that somewhat with Star Wars, Serect World, or DDO, but it's just not the same.

OKAMI!!!!!!

any of the Final Fantasy series, any RTS, any elder scrolls game, any TEKKEN, and Duke Nukem (3D, time to kill, and the first 2, before 3D)

The Exchange

Ooohhh, listing things :D

Like others, can't really choose one, here are several strong contenders:

1) Most things by Biowere - Mass Effect leading, of course, but Dragon Age (not the junky one), KotOR are also strong contenders... I didn't get to play neverwinter nights or baldur's gate yet.

2) Half Life franchise and both Portal. All of these games completely blew my mind when I first played them, for achieving perfectly the tone they were aiming for - plus they are just pure fun.

3) Call of Duty 2. In recent years the Call of Duty series has been sinking ever deeper into a pool of muck, but Call of Duty 2 was the perfect world war 2 game. Even as I cut down billions of Nazis I felt weary, afraid and lost. There was a very real feeling that something bigger than me was going on, and that my main interest in the whole thing was to survive the madness. Perfect tone, very fun gameplay. Honorable mentions go to World at War, which was fine, and Modern Warfare 4, which still pretended it was about more than juvenile empowerment. Oh, and I guess Black Ops *tried* to do something interesting with the narrative...

4) Heroes of Might and Magic 3/6: Fell in love with 3 as a child, kept coming back to it over the years. Recently 6 has been satisfying that itch, with it's more modern interface and interesting armies and campaigns.

5) Bioshock (not the one you needed the internet to understand it's ending) - Another perfect example of a game that's oozing so much atmosphere that it's fun.

Honorable Mentions:
the Arkham series of batman games are really, really fun.
Speaking of fun, how about "Freedom Force: Vs. The Third Reich!"?
I have enjoyed many a good hour with dotA.
Most of the Warhammer 40k games by Sacred Relic are very good, with the peak reached at Dawn of War 2.
The Walking Dead Telltale game was one of the most emotional experiences I had with any computer game. Stupid thing had me on the verge of tears by the end.

For nostalgia reasons, these games have to be mentioned:
Theme Park World
Red Alert 2
Age of Empires 3 (I think? or was it 2?)
Warcraft 3
all sorts of Lego games, like the racing one and lego Star Wars
Small Soldiers
Rayman 2

Oh, and also XCOM. What a game.

OKAMI!!!!!!

I found Okamiden for cheap at a used game store, along with Bravely Default and Xenoblade Chronicles. Thus far it is proving to be an entertaining and suitable sequel.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

That's something that bothers me to no end, why do all these amazing games get nothing but hand held /mobile sequels that preform so poorly on the market that a new console version never surfaces.

Okamiden is a fun little game, and I enjoyed playing it, but no where near as much as Okami. Though with the chances of getting a true sequal were always slim to none I can accept Okamiden as a good follow up

Though I can't say the same for what happened with Valkyria Chronicles and it's sequels.

Pointless Rant:

The original was an great tactical game with a fantastic story, and all it got in the way of sequels were two rather weak spin off hand held games. One about a high school with all the requisite cheesy story tropes, and the second arguably better one story wise basically stole the originals thunder by reducing the significance of some of the revelations that occurred. And the only reason I've ever seen for this evolution was that it was much faster and cheaper to churn out a lower quality hand held sequel to make a quick buck than to take the time to craft another artful and thoughtful piece like the original.

atheral wrote:

I can't say I'm helping much, the vast majority of games I play are either PC or handheld. Xenoblade's the first console game I've bought in a long, long time, and I only grabbed it because I know how rare it is and I was lucky to see it there; I might grab a used Wii/Wii U somewhere down the line for that plus a couple of Mario games but likely little else.

Return Rant/Discussion:
I never did get to play the first VC game, though I do know about its story from wikis and the anime adaptation. While I do agree that the story in the first game was better than the second, I owned VC II for my PSP-3000 and I had no problems with the actual gameplay. The controls were good, it was definitely difficult enough to be a challenge, and there was much more depth to the mechanics in general. Sure, the second game's story wasn't as good, but the characters were still engaging and there was plenty to do. VC II is still one of the best games for the PSP system, and if it sold poorly it's probably due to the lack of popularity for the system and not the game.

That said, I do agree that too many console games get ported (and poorly - Poorted? Huh.) to the handheld systems. Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty are big offenders on the Vita, and neither of those are as good as the console versions. On the other hand, some series like Metal Gear Solid and God of War do so well on handheld systems that they end up getting remastered and sold for consoles (MGS: Peace Walker, for instance). It's sort of a trial-and-error process I suppose.

im sorry you didnt like it. I loved valkyria chronicles in all its incarnations. Have the artbooks for the latter two, and I think the second is my favorite. This may be because I love strategy AND high school drama dating sim stuff. Also LOOOOOOOOVE Juliana. Two guesses as to why.

Well, to be completely honest I have very little love for the PSP/Vita and my DS has been gathering dust ever since I beat the last Professor Layton game. I just can't get into a game on a hand held the way I can PC/Consolse game.

I can't say that Valkyria Chronicles 2 and 3 were Bad Games in and of themselves, just that I felt they were disappointing follow-ups to the Original.

LuniasM, You are not the first person to raise the point about the mechanics of VC2 to me but when I think about games I like, I always put Story Quality above Mechanical Quality. My personal thoughts are that a game can get away with somewhat sloppy mechanics if the Story is good enough. Admittedly the reverse can be true it just seems not as common.

Freehold DM, For me it's tone shift, while I love anime which has alot of the same tone and theme as VC2, coming off of VC1 the shift was too jarring. Which is why I like the elements of VC3 better despite only being able to read a transcript. But of the three the Original just holds my interest better. Meh, don't really know...just chalk it up to an quirk in personal taste I guess.
