FX's The Strain

Television

Just heard of this today... Guillermo del Toro's and Chuck Hogan's vampire trilogy has been adapted into a 13-episode show. The Strain premieres July 13th @ 10PM Eastern on FX.

Read the books.
The first one was great...

is the 13 episodes just book 1?

I hope so.

Anyone else think this series is totally copying the Spawn of Kyuss (worm infected zombies that infect anyone they come in contact with, etc.) Isn't that copyrighted?

Sovereign Court

It was written before that. Long long before that.

I binge watched all the episodes last week. I rather like it.

Not even close. The first novel came out in 2009. The Sons of Kyuss were monsters in the original Fiend Folio for 1st edition AD&D released back in 1981.

They're not zombies, they're vampires. No copyright infringement here. Besides, Del Toro is just using his leftover ideas from Blade 2.

I'm sensing that someone wasn't fond of the rest of the series. You're not alone.

I wanted to like this series, but practically every character (at least for most of the first half of the season) completely lacks anything that could be remotely considered common sense. Also, there is just sooooooooo much padding.

Sovereign Court

Pilot was ok.

Gonna have to change Eff's son's name to "Carl". If you're confused, watch The Walking Dead...

I don't want to watch that train wreck of a show.

Anyway, after binge watching 11 episodes, I want more. The show is good, the gore is tasteful. Acting could do with a little more improvement, but still I am enjoying it.

The kid is fine.

I just LOVE the German guy.

I like it so far...true to the books for the most part.

major change from books based on last episode

Sovereign Court

A decent last episode. Now I eagerly await the next season.

I want to like it but... it seems like they take zero precaution against the worms and it's by sheer luck (or plot armour) that none of them get infected. Those things splatter everywhere when they fight in close quarters.

Sovereign Court

Yeah, that kinda bothered me to. At least some sort of a steel neck brace or something.

They would be totally doomed if the vampires thought to fill waterballoons with worms and toss them at the protagonists.

Sovereign Court

Good thing that the regular turned are mindless pretty much.

Spoiler:
I wonder how different is the wife vampire

Am i the only one that hates the look of the head vampire. He reminds me of a funny looking vampire muppet elf and is only semi scary when he moves like a wraith . Really hope the special effects budget improves.

They also need some more of the atmosphere/direction/acting that walking dead has.

Don't worry, he won't look like that forever ;)

There is an entire backstory to why the master is that big, which they did not cover.
As things change, it'll probably get mentioned.

true on backstory. the rocker and the lower level zombie vamps are scarier than him. Not saying they didnt put effort into him but even the characters dont flinch when they see him

Sovereign Court

Please don't let it be anything like walking dead. Walking dead is living example of how NOT TO MAKE a zombie show. It's so horrible it physically hurts to watch it.

Maybe that's the point. He should look silly, and then he sucks you dry and pulverizes your head.

I really like this show and can't wait until the 2nd season. Loving the special effects.

The main problem some people have with the show is that they feel some of the characters are stupid, but I feel that a lot of people (in real life) are stupid, selfish and illogical, so it really wouldn't surprise me. I just shrug and try not to let it bother me (like the clerk in the convenience store hahaha).

The Master could look better but he's acceptable. He was scarier when he was just a pile of rags with tentacles for a face and lightning fast.
