Is Rage's Strength increase enough to qualify for Power Attack?

Rather silly idea popped up my mind recently.
if a barbarian were to start with strength 12, could he still take Power Attack at first level, when he still can get strength to 16 with rage?

Part of me disagrees due to the fact that it'd be reasonable to have raw strength 13 to qualify for feats, but at the same time part of me agrees that there are some other scenarios where even temporary abilities qualify to take certain things. Such as druid's wild shape ability. They could take feats that increase natural attack damage dice even if they can use wild shape only a certain times per day. (no, this assumption does not include PFS special rule about those feats for a PC)


I think it would be a no, because the strength and constituition bonuses from rage are only temporary bonuses.

so is the polymorph effect from wild shape/beast shape; even if they last hours instead of rounds, they're still temporary.

if you could possible manage to make it last longer than 24 hours it COULD (not necessarily) count if you could keep it going each day.

but no, under no normal circumstances could a temporary effect allow you to qualify for feats if you do not qualify normally.


Yes temporay bonusses dosent make you qualify. But borrow some dudes belt of str for a few days and you can take the feat. And then you can use it again when you rage.


A temporary bonus is similar to ability score damage. If you had a strength of 13 and ability damage was dealt to your strength, you'd still be able use the feat because it's not permanent.

It works the same in reverse. If your strength isn't 13 and you use a spell or ability that increases it to 13, you can't use the feat because you aren't using your strength, you're being temporarily enhanced. Also, from an in-game character viewpoint, just because you're suddenly stronger for a time, no matter how long it lasts, you wouldn't know to put that kind of force behind your attacks because you don't know your own strength.

same, I fluff it as them using that temp bonus to train for the feat.


Even if you can take it, its a bad idea. 16 strength really isn't enough to-hit to be burning it on Power Attack. (IMHO of course)


Since this is the rules section SKR'd idea does not work for this case. You would have to make it permanent, but like someone said, borrowing a belt would work, but it is not a good idea.


I would not allow it at my table.


After a serious and thorough thinking-through on my own, added to your hive-minding, I came to accept that it does indeed not work.

I suppose I could spill the beans and explain what I had in mind.

a noble-ish, scholarly-type skald (not an archetype nor ACG class in this case, but an ulfen/nordic person)
starting as an urban barbarian, and going to alchemist (or Investigator, if they end up having an archetype without trapfinding [god I hate it when everyone gets it these days!]); even though I'm not too keen about bombs in this concept, rather the alchemy and especially mutagen, hence the brackets' contents.

So yeah, I was thinking of a blend of barbarian using rage (w/strength and no AC penalty, preferably) added up with Strength Mutagen. At first, beginning with str 13, this would end up with str 21 at the very least, but later I realized I could as well go with str as much as 14-15 to begin with

All the same time being knowledgeable and astute, rather than single-minded brute (like the usual barbarian!)
