martial versatility and spiked destroyer

Rules Questions

It was suggested to me to use versatility with destroyer recently, and I'm skeptical if it indeed works. It was mentioned that dervish dance works with this feat to allow you to apply it to any heavy blade.

Can I use martial versatility to apply it to another weapon besides armor spikes?

Actually, the interaction between Dervish Dance, and Martial Versatility, has not been confirmed.

I believe a general consensus was "no" though.

I would guess that applies here as well.

Martial Versatility only appears to work with things that allow you to choose a specific weapon, like Weapon Focus, Feral Combat Training, or Dazzling Display.

So, whilst this feat only applies to a specific weapon, it is not a specific weapon you choose.

It would also seem to not work with things like, Quarterstaff Master.

I figured this was the case. The feat is way to specific in what it affects.

The person told me a dev clarified in a post it does indeed work. Is this true, and if so, can anyone point me in that direction?

Grand Lodge

I certainly heard of no such comment.

I can try searching.

Here, Jason Nelson notes the Dervish Dance/Martial Versatility combo, was not meant to work.

Not sure if he means by RAW, but certainly RAI.

Even if it wasn't meant to work, I think the wording supports it working.

Quarterstaff Master, Dervish Dance, and Spiked Destroyer "apply to a single weapon." The Quarterstaff, Scimitar, and Armor Spikes, respectively.

So do you value the intent or the wording?

I'm not familiar with who Jason is. How much weight should one place on his posts?

He's the person who wrote the feat, IIRC. I don't think he has any special authority though, especially since writers have been known to get overruled by the head honchos at Paizo (see: Titan Mauler).

Let me repost this from another thread. In effect, nothing anyone says on the boards should be given any RAW weight. Feel free to take whatever RAI you want from forum posts but as Arachnofiend said, an authors RAI may not be the overall Pazio teams RAI.

Stephen Radney-MacFarland wrote:

No, and this is one of the points I want to make. Messageboard posts on a subjects made by the design and development team are not "official rulings" on the games. Clarifications in FAQ posts and errata are official rulings.

This serves a couple of purposes.

First, it allows the design and development team to interact with fans, and have rules discussions with fans, in an exploratory, argumentative (and I mean that in a construct sense) and even sometimes a playful manner without the fear of taking such comments out of context. This is good for everyone.

Second, it does not force anyone playing the game to participate in or wade through message board threads (some of which can be a thousand or more posts long) in order to find official rulings. Many of us enjoy doing such things, but not everyone, and it should not be seen as a requirement for playing Pathfinder.

Yeah, but I am already in enough debates on the boards involving dev/author posts that I just felt I would leave it as a question for the OP to answer himself.

I figured. That's why I just re-posted Stephen Radney-MacFarland's post and not the entire post. ;)

blackbloodtroll was questioning if Jason Nelson notes would be RAW. I'm not even sure if we can be sure it even proves RAI and it sure wouldn't be RAW per the repost.

Grand Lodge

It certainly sounds obnoxious, mechanically, to have those feats, work with Martial Versatility.

I am not expressing a desire to have them work, or not work, together, but I do hope that the question can be answered.

I suspect, that the RAI, is that it works in the manner I described in my earlier post.

Someone I play with in PFS suggested it to me, and said he was sure it absolutely worked. I mentioned how there is a forum post saying that forum posts aren't official rulings (which he based his certainty on a forum post), and then we talked about the irony of that.

So, in the world of PFS, how does one attempt to make this work? Ask a GM if it's chill, and if they're down let it rock? If not, then you have a useless feat?

Grand Lodge

Well, it would be met with some very heavy table variance.

I try to avoid anything that would be met with conflict, in this manner, in PFS.

Even being on the side of I think that RAW allows it, I agree that it is best to avoid anything this controversial.

Just play a Swashbuckler ACG playtest character (PFS legal).

I figured as much. Thanks everyone for your input on the matter.
