Lessen dex penalty on heavy armor?

So there are some ways I see that lessen the "armor check penalty" of heavy armor. It's my understanding that things that lessen the armor check penalty have no effect on the dex penalty. Am I right in this?

That being said, I believe fighters can do this from leveling up, and if I can make it out of mithral that will, too. Are there feats, or other materials, or anything else I'm missing that can effect this?

Celestial Plate Armor has a +6 Max Dex. If it's a home game, you might be able to talk your DM into making it out of Mithril.

Other than that, I'm pretty sure the only other improvements can come from Fighter levels.

Silver Crusade

Fighters get Armor Training (unless their archetype trades it out) every four levels starting with 3d. It reduces armor check penalty and adds to the Maximum Dexterity Limit.

Mithral (can't get used to that spelling) does make both adjustments too. Darkleaf Cloth can do the same for some of the armors.

Archives of Nethys is a good site for making comparisons.

Hm, so for non-fighter it's pretty much mithral or nothing for heavy armor..

Or dump DEX. It's not that much of a problem. If you drop down to 8 DEX, then a cat's grace will bring you up to 12, which is still within the Max Dex Bonus of a full plate.

The Armor Expert trait can be used to lessen your armor check penalty by 1, also.

You're definitely right, but I was trying to find a way to have 14 dex and combat reflexes while in heavy armor without having to be a fighter. Mithral is definitely an option, but I won't have that option for a long time due to resource constraints.

Correct, but the original post was about improving maximum Dexterity, not ACP. Armor Expert does not affect maximum Dexterity.

with a 14 dex you only miss out on 1 ac, it's not that bad to not have for awhile, or ever even. Fullplate will still be higher than anything else.

Armor Training, Mithral and hell knight armor, are the only ways to do it. Hell knight/Fighter can get the highest max dex in Mithral hell knight full plate with sash of the champion.

you can have a 14 dex and combat reflex in full plate and not be a fighter your just limited to only getting +1 to you dex mod to ac. you still get 2 extra Aoo from the dex mod, the bonus to initiative and reflex saves and skill checks. Those things are not effected by armor.

Thanks for pointing that out. I thought it applied to everything dex related and not just AC. After finding the relevant text I see that I was mistaken.

Can someone verify "sash of the champion" for me?

It says "for the purpose of armor training and bravery". If I'm a lvl 1 fighter that would bump me up to lvl 5 and would that then bump me up to armor training 1 and bravery 1 or would I already have to have them before it would enhance them?

You have to already have them.

When do I count as having a class feature?

You have a class feature when your class description tells you you gain that class feature, generally based on your level in that class (and perhaps altered by factors, see below).

Sash of the War Champion will have no effect on your Armor Training until you have it at level 3. It increases the level of class features you already possess, it does not give you class features you do not yet possess.

Is there a FAQ on this because I could see it either way from how it's written. A lvl 5 fighter would have those two class features, and that's exactly what the sash does regarding those two features.

claudekennilol, Belafon already quoted the FAQ.

In short, you cannot advance a class feature you do not yet possess.
