While one of my player's was creating his character, he had a question about the climber's kit. When you purchase the climber's kit, what exactly are you paying for? Is it just to get the +2 to your climbing skill or does the climber's kit also include materials?
If it includes materials, how much rope and how many pitons? Is this something, as GM, that I have to make up?

This is what the Climber's Kit description says:
These crampons, pitons, ropes, and other tools give you a +2 circumstance bonus on Climb checks.
You could simply assume the tools are easy enough to retrieve while climbing, otherwise you could also make the cost negligible. A very small amount for a bundle of crampons and stuff.

Sometimes that level of detail just isn't in pathfinder. If you wish to add a quantity of pitons that is your call as a GM. Mostly, I think it's handled by a single check with a high DC, possibly with a penalty for not having "enough". You could even do several checks if you wanted to represent different sections of the climb, but, again, this is mostly left up to the DM.

Agreed with Choon, this extra level of detail doesn't make the game more fun for the player. And in fact, telling him half way through his climb he looses his +2 bonus is likely to make him feel cheated. Just handwave it. He has all the pitons and crampons he needs. As long as he has enough length of rope the rest should be irrelevant.
