Mounted Warrior that's not Devistated without their mount?

Advice

Hi Everyone,

I've always wanted to try some type of mounted warrior. But, I also don't want to put all of my eggs in one basket in case the mount dies or can't fit inside the dungeon. I like the idea of a human/animal tag team that occasionally rides into battle together.

What is the best class/archetype that can:
1) have a mount at lvl 1
2) can ride said mount (preferably medium sized)
3) and have the mount and rider be effective as a tag team when the space/combat prevents the mount from being ridden.

Thanks!

Go with a small rider and medium mount. Never get off your mount. He'll I ride mine into peoples houses. A bunch of don't care..mixed with if you want my help the mount goes where I go.

'Mount at level 1' means druid, cavalier, or summoner - though I think there's an archetype that lets a ranger do it. Fruian is right about the greater utility of a Small character. However, bear in mind that the more you expect to use the mount, the more you'll have to equip your mount to keep its contribution meaningful - barding, protective items, etc. A mount who is an occasional assistant doesn't have quite the same level of need for these things.

Whether it's an eidolon, mount, or animal companion, losing the steed is a blow, but none of these classes is utterly dependent on their companion. You can hedge against such loss by not investing in the mounted combat feats, which turn from strong to useless if your mount is incapacitated in any way.

Scarab Sages

You don't have to have an animal companion class feature to have occasional fun with mounted combat. This book was designed to make Mounted Combat useful and fun to play without having to build a character concept around it.

just play a samurai and be awesome on your own. Being mounted is still a perk but not required.

How is the samurai different/better than the cavalier? Don't they both get mounts, challenge, etc?

Which of the mounted classes makes a better a tag team? I.e. PC and mount fighting side by side?

Samurai swaps out all of the cavaliers mounted charge related abilities. Cavalier has a very heavy mount focus, his class being composed of mount and charge abilities, his order and challenge, nad his teamwork feats. Samurai gets resolve related abilities, mounted archery, and weapon expertise and still has bonus feats of his own, among other changes. Samurai can also totally get rid of his mount for sword saint, but its not really a fantastic archetype imo.

Druid for spells/buffs and fighting in wild shape next to his companion, or a barbarian for his ability to rage and give him and his companion his rage powers.

Luring cav4/gunslinger16
Get monstrouus animal companion/the feat that makes the mount scale/better monstrous animal companion...

IE ride a griffon and weild a gun

Go with Samurai, you're an archer with and without your mount.

I think a druid would work best. When necessary you can buff the mount to fight without you.

The cav/gunslinger idea sounds like it would suffer from feat starvation, and a barbarian can only buff his/her mount while riding it IIRC.

Samurai. Become mounted archer.

Also very little on the samurai class ability list makes it "asian" you can even take cav orders.

For reference: A medium sized summoner can't actually mount their Eidolon at first level. The Eidolon is stuck at medium size until level 8.
