Star Wars: Episode VII Cast Announced

April 29, 2014

The Star Wars team is thrilled to announce the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII.

Actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow will join the original stars of the saga, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker in the new film.

Director J.J. Abrams says, "We are so excited to finally share the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII. It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again. We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud."

Can't wait.

No Ahmed Best in the cast? ;)

What will Andy Serkis be doing, I wonder?
Gollum type stuff, or actually physically acting?

Are you saying his portrayal of gollum wasnt acting? I think it was pretty darn impressive acting.

That said, its pretty certain he is going to be cgi'ing some weird alien thing.

The Star Wars site that is getting staggering hits.

In case you were wondering who Daisy Ridley is. Like I was.

can someone name whos who around the table?

Dark Archive

As reminder of how amazing Space Opera was pre Jar Jar and pod racing, the master, Ralph McQuarrie's concept Art from the Original Trilogy, that still holds up to this day.

I'll take a small stab at it.

It looks like Mark Hamil talking to either Max von Sydow or Anthony Daniels (you can not tell from this angle) on the left corner. To his left is Andy Serkis in glasses looking down or reading.

Following clockwise is Oscar Isaac next to John Boyega. They are followed by Adam Driver then I am guessing Kenny Baker (I am not sure).

R2 D2 is above J.J. Abrams who is chatting up Harrison Ford. He is next to Daisy Ridley (the only actor I had to google in the group) who is listening to Carrie Fisher. I am guessing that's Peter Mayhew on the corner clearly looking down to read. The couple with their backs to us I do not know, possibly producers.

Lastly we see the back of Domhnall Gleeson.

Not at all. I tried to parse that out to distinguish between CGI and real, not to diminish his talent.

This Link has the names for the who's who on it.

I've never heard of most of them...

And I consider that a good thing.

I fully expect that the script will be written to incorporate a 5-second pause in all action as each of the original cast comes on screen for the first time to allow for the screaming and hooting to die down in the theatre so that no one watching will miss a line of dialogue. :)

Emperor Ming in Star Wars FTW.

Hail Ming!

While I admire some of the people on this list, it's a bit of a sausage fest. I mean, that's been pretty much a given in all the Star Wars movies, but they have a chance to break that mold here.

Here.

I'm kinda surprised Hamill's coming back. Didn't he say a while back that he thought playing Luke ruined his (non-voice) acting career?

Possibly another female lead to be cast.

I'm a minority in this and I really dont care. I know if there were a female lead cast in these new movies these and other boards would EXPLODE with glee and joy and all would be AWESOME.

As it stands it makes me very, very VERY happy to see John Boyega as one of the leads in this new series. I dont know how important his part is. I'm hoping that it's substantial. I'm hoping that he's not there just to be KILLED and motivate the other (all white) characters to seek REVENGE (yes it doesnt only happen to women. It's also happens with the ethnic sidekick as well).

When I told my 12 year old that Moses from ATTACK THE BLOCK was going to be one of the leads in the new STAR WARS he was like "They're making Luke Skywalker BLACK?!?" When I explained to him that he'd be a new character he was like "Oh! That's cool!"

He doesnt get that Black people simply dont get lead roles in major franchises. EVER. Those franchises are made for white men (and women) mostly. And when a little bit of color gets added there's usually a bit of a backlash as I'm sure they will be with this casting.

Either way I'm kind of elated and excited about the casting, knowing that Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hammill will reprise their iconic roles. I'm excited about JJ Abrams because unlike with Star Trek, he IS a HUGE Star Wars fan. And I really believe that he and the crew are going to make the best Star Wars movie that they can.

Love new trek. Will love new star wars.

See where you are coming from with race, but originally han was supposed to be landos inspiration via death, remember?

If youre talking about Han flying the Falcon instead of Lando and dying in the Death Star II run? Because that's not even remotely the same thing.

There was backlash about blacks having lead roles in SW?

So, who will they cast as Tifa and Aeris?

That kinda sounds like a great reason to come back to the role. :)

Please I'm begging you don't turn this into another FF4 thread that was irritating enough last time.

See I'd heard the first thing but that second part is news to me. And quite frankly would have been kind of interesting.

I pretty much loved Django Unchained. But probably my favorite non-action scene in the movie was

Movie Plot Spoiler:
Django kneeling beside King Schultz's body, placing his hand on his dead freind's head and taking a moment. Now you know that he's gonna kill his way through everyone to rescue his wife but he's also doing it to avenge his dear friend.

And Lucas reportedly said something along the lines of "No one wants a dead Han Solo toy" when he kiboshed that plot point.

Missed an amazing marketing opportunity there, I think. It's something other franchises should jump on. Why HBO doesn't have a line of action figures based on the show is beyond me. "Get your Ned Stark action figure--with removable head--now!"

wonder if Boba will be in it. Id take a cameo or even a name drop by another character. There were rumors that they would give him his own film/series. Will they take any expanded universe ideas?

The question in regard to Han Solo was whether Harrison Ford was willing to perform in the last movie. Freezing him at the end of the second movie provided a way to write him out of the third movie if necessary. As soon as Harrison Ford agreed to come back for the third movie, that contingency plan was discarded.

Picture this:

End of episode 7: Pan down to Tatooine, over sand dunes, to the Sarlac pit. We hear a couple of blaster shots from inside the mouth of the Sarlac. Crawling out, all beaten and brusied is Boba Fett. Armor all faded and dented. Breathing heavy, he gets of the the mouth and stands up. Wanting to breathe real air again we see his shadow start to take off the helmet.
The camera pans up to show it was Jar Jar Binks in the armor.
Fade to black.
Roll credits.

I wouldn't hold your breath. It will probably have a lot in common with JJs Trek reboot. It will be a good film that will really piss off the fans with what was changed.

I almost hope that they don't pull from the EU, because I don't really want to see Thrawn without his art obsession, or Luke fall to the Dark Side in the service of the Clone Emperor only to be saved by Leia.
I really don't want to see the Yuuzong Vong drop a moon on Chewbacca's head. On the other hand, I REALLY want to see a coven of Dathomiri Force Witches riding rancors into battle.

But who knows whats going to happen.

Oh, don't worry. They won't.

That's sad because the only Star Wars stuff I was really a fan of were the previously canon games like KoTOR and Battlefront.

Thrawn trilogy would be awesome.

Sigh. The other guy who handles SharePoint at work is a massive, and I mean MASSIVE Star Wars fan. While looking at the casting annoucement last night after I went home, he discovered the soundboards...

I came in this morning, noticed I had a bunch of voicemails, thought they might have been from the IT guys in our overseas offices. NOPE. 10 g%@##!n voicemails worth of Star Wars character quotes, most of them from Jar Jar Binks. Rage doesn't begin to cover it.

You've likely just force ranged heart-attack (Su) a sizable chuck of fans in a single blow. You will make an excellent Sith.

Grand Lodge

I'll be honest I'm not that excited for the cast. Admittedly there were a couple of bigger names I was really hoping to see, but the likelihood was slim since pretty much everyone auditioned for a new Star Wars film. Granted I'm also one that would have preferred a film set 150 years in the future and them leaving the EU alone.

Nothing to do with Episode VII, but it's because the book versions of the GoT figures were already licensed.
