possible misprint in advanced race guide?

"Focused Study All humans are skillful, but some, rather than being generalists, tend to specialize in a handful of skills. At 1st, 8th, and 16th level, such humans gain Skill Focus in a skill of their choice as a bonus feat. This racial trait replaces the bonus feat trait."

the descriptive text sounds as though it is replacing the skilled trait with a skill focus feat, giving up the ability to put that extra skill point each level into any skill you want for a larger bonus to a specific skill, so shouldn't this trait replace the skilled racial trait rather than the bonus feat racial trait?

Nope.

As intended.

Basically, humans who might want to use their bonus feat for Skill Focus get a little extra boost over other races. Since Skill Focus is not a terribly common feat outside of feat taxes or offsetting a dump stat, this provides a bit of a carrot.

Dark Archive

it just seems kind of ridiculous as it is written: replace a single feat with three feats, whereas the other way it would, ultimately, replace 20 skill points with 18 virtual skill points, but those are above the normal limit, which would fit the flavor text far more accurately

Not a misprint at all. Even with this option, most of my characters that need Skill Focus for some reason or other still go with half-elf.

I actually take Skill Focus quite often. It's always fun to be the best at a skill, after all. Regardless, it's definitely way better than seven skill points.

Yeah, the only time I think about the feat is if I'm taking Eldritch Heritage. If so, why not get 2 free focus feats? Other than that is rare to NEED a skill bad enough to toss a feat away on it...

Outside of qualifying for a prestige class or great feats and stuff like that skill focus is generally speaking a horrible waste of a feat... Gaining 3 skill focus feats might be worth it... MIGHT! I still wouldn't take it with 95% of my characters... Does that seem OP to you?

If I make a character that dumps Wisdom to 9 or 10, it's handy for boosting Perception back to usable levels. Especially if paired with a make-Perception-a-class-skill trait.

Yeah... And even then it is a questionable choice. I mean... Say that you do choose perception which is probably the best skill to boost, then the last 2 parts of skill focus comes so late that the usefull skills they could apply to are already so high in modifier that it usually wont matter much.

But fair... a character with low int and wis and great skill selection such as perception and umd would benefit greatly from this choice... But that is already 3 requirements for making this really usefull.

As I said, it's not terribly popular, but it works for some characters. That's more than I can say for Monkey Lunge. : )

.... WTF? Never seen that feat before. Completely useless. I mean... WTH?

Fair enough. Compared to monkey Lunge as written, this trick of turning a single feat into 3 skill focus feats over time is absolutely GODLIKE!
And just so that we are clear. I was never slamming you blahpers. I was slamming a bit on this trick. But I was only doing it from an optimization point of view... Go right ahead and make a Bard with monkey lunge if that is what floats your boat. Just be aware that it might not be to effective in combat :D
