Is the Noble Scion feat legal in PFS?

Pathfinder Society

Hi gang, are you allowed to play a noble / aristocrat in legal Society play? I have been excited about a new concept, though I have minor concerns to its viability, and major concerns to its legality. I always favor RP over effectiveness, but I would very much like a legal PFS character if it is possible to do so.

In particular, I was actually hoping to find out if the Noble Scion feat was allowed. According to the official listing, many of the feats from pages 284 - 289 of the Inner Sea World Guide are allowed, but there's a few other books I'd rather buy first unless this feat does qualify. Could someone who already owns the ISWG let me know what page Noble Scion lives on? That's the only bit of info I need to finish solving the riddle, thanks!

By extension, I should mention that I have no desire in the prestige class of the same name, or anything like that. Even this feat does nothing for my build and is just for roleplay, and a means to establish with any DM that I actually am a noble instead of merely trying to say that I'm one. By that same extension I would pick any legal traits that signify me as a member of the nobilty. I'm going for the challenge of a Tyrion Lannister type: charisma skills with no charisma, a sullied noble with few tangible rewards except for the RP opportunities. Perhaps excuses to better bribe or intimidate. Hoping it's legal but wanted to check; many thanks for all your help! Suggestions are welcome.

You can find out what is legal for PFs here.

You can find out what is and is not legal for PFS on the Additional Resources page.

I think you're missing the question Compass Rose asked. She did read Additional Resources.

Yes, that feat is on those pages and is legal for Society Play.

Go ahead and buy the book.

To answer your question, Noble Scion is on page 288 of the ISWG, so it's legal. (the page range listed covers all feats in the book).

So go build that CHA based character. ;-)

Ah, many thanks to you all! :)

Yes, I'm definitely a bit concerned about being an Oracle...I thought they'd be Wisdom! But I've never seen the class before (newbie) and it looked neat. If my math isn't, er...too off, I could raise CHA +1 every four levels, so as long as I start with no lower than 14, by lv 20 I could cast 9th level divine spells. I also read that CHA turns into the sort of "life force" for undead, which she would be slowly becoming to some extent. It's enough for my brain's rationalization, though I would love an even lower CHA. Options like "Bruising Intellect" to use INT for talky talk skills...now that would be Tyrion!

Mutants and Masterminds 3.0 handles it best, I think. They changed Charisma's name to "Presence," to reflect the same skills in a mean or ugly character as well.

Actually, it sounds like she already looked at the Additional Resources. For Inner Sea World Guide, it says in part:

Additional Resources. ISWG wrote:
Feats: all feats on pages 284–289 except Eye of the Arclord, Fortune Teller, Hamatulatsu, Harrowed, and Shade of the Uskwood. For the Cypher Magic feat, replace the Scribe Scroll prerequisite with Spell Focus

What she is asking is whether or not Noble Scion is on one of those pages, since she doesn't have a copy of the book to look at.

The answer is that, generally speaking, all feats will be grouped together, so when they tell you 'Feats on pages 284 - 289' there isn't another page range of feats that are being excluded. They're just giving the pages to be extra helpful. If Noble Scion is in the ISWG, and it isn't in the ones called out as illegal, then you can be confident that it is legal.

Also, for future reference, the Archives of Nethys will actually tell you what page of the book things are on, to help with questions like this. Probably not 100% accurate (because nothing is) but a really good bet. It says that Noble Scion is on page 288 -- so you're good to go.

EDIT: Ninja'd by many.

But she would need to own the book anyhow to be able to use it, right?

Be aware that the highest level for PFS scenarios is 11th. After that, there's a retirement arc that you can play through to hit 13th, and then you can play modules if you want, but they're not written with PFS in mind.

@pH unbalanced, oh neat! What a very useful site!

@Cheapy, totally. There are other things I'd prefer to own first (a love of dwarves and a lack of money) so I wanted to make sure it was definitely in there and legal before I took the plunge and bought it. I feared it might be huddling right before or after that section if they were divided up into categories or something.

@Jiggy, yikes I did not know that! Thanks for the tip!

Also by clicking through the link to your character profile, I see that you have six traits, one of which is a drawback, correct?

Drawbacks are not legal for PFS as far as I know, so you would need to remove that and one additional trait.

The other four are good since you took the additional traits feat.

Edit: double checked additional resources, drawbacks are not legal for PFS.

Oh no, they aren't?! Eek! You're absolutely right, she had the "Sentimental" drawback to pine over her former life. Thank you so much for catching it!

I would suggest reading over and reviewing this document as well.

I know i tend to build my characters online and then go shopping depending on which books I find stuff I like in.

@Chris, thank you I will definitely pour over it again!

@BigNorseWolf, that's exactly how I've been doing mine so far too :)

There is a single path that can take your character to level 20.

As Jiggy mentioned, after level 13.2 it involves modules, and one section of an AP, and finishes up with the Season 4 Special, which will be hard to find being run anywhere (Season 6 comes out this summer).

But it is possible.

And just fyi: The feats aren't the only useful stuff in the Inner Sea World Guide. There's some information on human ethnicies (and owning the book, your humans can start with more than just Common as starting languages). Speaking of languages, the book has a complete list of racial and regional languages spoken in Avistan and Garund.
There's some nice background information about the Core deities and there's a lot additional deities to choose from.
And most importantly, very good descriptions of every country in the Inner Sea region with wonderful illustrations. Oh, and it has a world map.

So, the Inner Sea World Guide is definitely worth its money.

For playing a noble, there's also the option of working for the Taldor faction and get a noble title for prestige when you hit 20 fame (for best results, work with both Noble Scion and a noble title ;) )

@Nefreet, you know I'd completely forgotten to have season 6 on my radar. There's actually a pretty good chance that I won't have much time for in-person gaming until this summer anyway. I will look into the 20 path, thank you!

@Andreas, that sounds great! I love lore books...and you can't be called Compass Rose without a love of maps. :D

Thank you to all the lovely folks who helped me figure out PFS legal nobility! ^_^

Dark Archive

Here's a trick I've found that really helps with a tight budget. Purchase the PDF from Paizo. Instead of a $40 rulebook, you can get a $10 PDF, and then you can print out just the pages your need for your character, and don't have to a heavy book around.

Though the Inner Sea World Guide is a fabulous book, and well worth the hardcover price.

Dark Archive

There are some books that I am inclined to own in PDF, since I do not drive it usually means the big hardcover ones. However, there are a few that I definitely want in hardcover because PDF just doesn't cut it. I have the Inner Sea World Guide in hardcover and would have it no other way. Medium range books like Ultimate Combat (which I have) and Ultimate Magic (which I don't) are toss ups. I can carry one or two along with several thin books. Then there are some of the newer published material like the Inner Sea Gods which I am pretty sure I want in hardcover, not PDF. Options and flexibility are good.

Thank you guys!! I'd been stocking up on the PDFs so far, but all this talk about the glories of the ISWG sure sound like the best way to go is hardcover! Ahh....pretty...... :D
