Brilliant Energy weapon property vs. Ethereal creatures.

Rules Questions

Does the Brilliant Energy weapon make the the weapon a force effect?

If so would such a weapon able to affect creatures that are ethereal?

If not are there any weapon property's that can make a weapon capable of harming an ethereal creature while the wielder is on prime material plane?

The Ethereal Jaunt spell states:
"Force effects and abjurations affect an ethereal creature normally."

Huh, interesting, I always assumed Brilliant Energy was a force effect. I would say yes in my games, but that's more of a house rule. From a strict RAW view BE wouldn't allow you to effect an ethereal creature.

I know that the Sword of the Planes would do specifically what you want.

I don't believe the Sword of Planes would work. Its description indicates it works better on various planes and against creatures from other planes but never states it reaches into those other planes from the prime material.

This isn't an undead ethereal creature right? Because then it would go right through them...

I see nothing to suggest that in the description; the spells upon which the weapon is based are gaseous form and continual flame, neither of which are force spells.

So going by RAW, no. Going by RAI (as I understand them), I also think not.

No it is not an undead creature. I am mainly looking for a weapon property that can be used against a creature using the Blink spell. If the weapon can affect an ethereal creature the miss chance drops from 50% to 20%.

I'd look into Ghost Touch weapons.

I don't think Ghost Touch does anything to ethereal, just to incorporeal.

You could get a Heartseeker weapon. It ignores concealment except against stuff without a heart, but you need to know what square the guy is in.

Gotcha. Best way might be scrolls or a wand of see invisibility. Or buy a basilisk.

CrystalSpellblade: blink isn't concealment at all.

It appears there may be no way for a pure fighter type to overcome or at least lessen the power of the Blink spell. I am beginning to believe this spell may be over powered when compared to the other spells of its level.

As long as you don't forget the 20% miss chance for the blinker you should be fine.

Easy solution - run away for three to five rounds, then run back. The spell should be over by then.

It is harder to overcome than similar effects. However, among those similar effects, it is the only spell that hinders the caster as well.

Physical attacks against you have a 50% miss chance, and the Blind-Fight feat doesn't help opponents, since you're ethereal and not merely invisible. If the attack is capable of striking ethereal creatures, the miss chance is only 20% (for concealment).

An ethereal creature is invisible, incorporeal, and capable of moving in any direction, even up or down. As an incorporeal creature, you can move through solid objects, including living creatures.

So yes, Blink is concealment. Also, Ghost Touch would help here as well as Ghost Touch deals normal damage to an ethereal creature.

The Ethereal Jaunt spell states:
"Force effects and abjurations affect an ethereal creature normally."

In order...

1. No
2. No
3. Ghost Touched.

What about ghost touch suggests that it affects ethereal creatures?

The only thing that can be considered a force weapon that I am aware of is a ring of force shield since you wield it as if it were a heavy shield.

Ethereal creatures are incorporeal.
