Rise of the Runelords PFS confusion. Example: How to get credit for Spires (lvl16 adventure)?

"Alternatively, if you are participating in the Rise of
the Runelords Adventure Path with an ongoing group
undertaking the entire, six-chapter campaign, you may
receive credit for playing the sanctioned portions of the
adventure as if you had played a pregenerated character."

It goes on to say that these parties aren't even bound by the usual PFS rules: 20-point buy etc.

Ok, cool! But Spires is a lvl 16-18 adventure. PFS caps at lvl 12. How do we apply that to PFS characters? You can't apply it until they reach that level, right?

Shadow Lodge

While PFS scenarios "cap out" at 12, the characters do not. You can play them in modules, as well as the sanctioned sections of Adventure Paths, that are above level 12, each of which will earn you 3 XP.

So the answer to your question is you use those to continue leveling your character.

If you play the AP in campaign mode, this counts as if you had played it with a pregen. Hence you can always choose to "downgrade" the Chronicle Sheet to apply it to a first-level character, with the gold reduced to 1398 gp. In the case of Spires of Xin-Shalast, it's especially interesting since your character would get one of those ioun stones way earlier that he would normally be able to, not to mention the fact that it's free. I think it's a great boon to reward people who went through the whole AP.

Grand Lodge 4/5

Correct, you cannot apply the full credit until you have a PFS PC who has reached the 16-18 level, but there are a bunch of modules and AP segments that can take you there, now.

Modules:
The Ruby Phoenix Tournament (10-12)
Academy of Secrets (12-14)
Tomb of the Iron Medusa (13-15)
The Moonscar (15-17)
The Witchwar Legacy (16-18)

AP segments:
JR - Forest of Spirits (10-12)
CC - Ashes at Dawn (11–13)
JR - Tide of Honor (11-13)
RoW - The Frozen Stars (11-13)
SS - Beyond the Doomdays Door (11-13)
S&S - The Price of Infamy (11-13)
RotR - Fortress of the Stone Giants (12-14)
CC - Shadows of Gallowspire (13-15)
RoW - Rasputin Must Die (13-15)
SS - Into the Nightmare Rift (13-15)
S&S - From Hell's Heart (13-15)
JR - The Empty Throne (14-16)
RotR - Sins of the Saviors (14-16)
RoW - The Witch Queen's Revenge (15-17)
RotR - The Spires of Xin-Shalast (16-18)
SS - The Dead Heart of Xin (16-18)

JR = Jade Regent
CC = Carrion Crown
RoW - Reign of Winter
SS = Shattered Star
S&S = Skull & Shackles
RotR = Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition

Note that this list may not be current with the most recently released AP sanctionings.

And, as noted by Lithrac, you can use the rule that lets you drop the GP to 1298, keep everything else, and apply it to a 1st level PC, who will immediately become 2nd level..

Now that you mention it, that sounds really scary ;) But to take into account the full impact this would have on a level 1 character, keep in mind one of the boons on the chronicle:

Runelord's Reputation Boon:
RotRL part 6 chronicle wrote:
Runelord’s Reputation: You defeated Runelord Karzoug, preventing his return to Golarion and the age of destruction and terror he would have ushered in. Your name is known far and wide for discovering Xin-Shalast and for bringing one of the mightiest wizards of all time to his ultimate ruin. As a result, your Fame score increases to equal 6 × your character level (as though you had earned maximum prestige in each adventure up to this point).

The way it's written, it just grants fame, though. Or are there any clarifications about also gaining prestige from this boon?

Runelord's Reputation Boon

Mark Moreland clarified HERE that it does both. There's another discussion thread on the odd wording of this boon HERE, but the most sensible way to work it seems to be:

Spoiler:
1. Add the XP from the module

2. Calculate the PC's 'max fame' (2 x XP)
3. Calculate the difference between 'max fame' and actual fame
4. Add that difference to current prestige
5. Increase actual fame to 'max fame'

You wouldn't add the XP and level up before making the calculations for the boon. All of the calculations would be based on the level of the character prior to the chronicle sheet being applied.

Is that formally stated anywhere? In 'After the scenario' on page 20 of the Guide, step 1 is XP, while step 4 is Prestige.

If you're right, it would be:

Spoiler:
1. Calculate the PC's 'max fame' (2 x XP)
2. Calculate the difference between 'max fame' and actual fame
3. Add that difference to current prestige
4. Increase actual fame to 'max fame'
1. Add the experience and prestige from the module (usually 3 XP & 4 PP)

You apply everything earned on a chronicle sheet all at the same time, but anything determined with a character based modifier is done with the character stats used during the scenario.

If you gain a level or buy a stat boost item at the end of a game. You can't use your new leveled up or boosted modifier on the day job roll. You're limited to using the modifier you had playing that game. The Runelord's Reputation also specifically says it only works on fame score earned up to the chronicle, but does not say to include it.

If the boon said, when used it does X you could apply it using the most up to date stats of the character.
