Losing my mind!! Opposing school information!

Rules Questions

For the love of all that's sacred can somebody post a link to a chart/graph/infomercial/charcoal sketch of the opposing schools for wizards.

What will oppose what? You think I can find information anywhere? I cannot.

BTW, any advice for making a 25 point buy elven wizard? All four main books and Advanced Race. Blaster preferred, but Transmutation also interesting. Feats, traits, etc up to level 11.

Thanks!

A wizard can choose any two schools he wishes to be opposed schools, unless he's a thassilonian specialist who outright forbids two specific schools dependent on his original school choice

In Pathfinder you may choose two schools as your opposition schools.

I believe it was 2nd Ed that had the fancy chart.

I miss that chart. It was kinda neat - I wonder if it can be found somewhere?

As musicaddict stated and I will reiterate, there are no 'set in stone' opposing schools: you get to choose what schools will oppose your specialty.

I can't really help you optimise an evocation wizard (they are extremely lacklustre...) but you'll want to take magical lineage trait for your favourite lowish level spell (fireball perhaps) and probably the admixture subschool of evocation so you aren't stuck with a single element when resistances come along. Pick up improved initiative and a bunch of metamagic feats/rods and then spam maximized empowered fireballs or dazing magic missiles all day. Your stat allocation should be INT>>CON>DEX>WIS>STR=CHA with your INT pushed up as high as possible for the save DCs -- you can probably afford 20 starting INT with 25 point buy.

Hope that helps! Somebody can probably give you better optimisation advice than that though.

Doesn't the Thassalonian school specialization stuff have opposed schools? Or are they just truly banned schools?

Banned.

Lantern Lodge

Probably not quite what you were thinking, but if you go with an Elemental School, you are required to take the opposed element as your oppositional school. E.g. Air/Earth, Fire/Water.

Also note that if you go with the Oriental style Elemental Schools, your opposition school is also pre-determined, but is a bit different than the traditional European style Elemental Schools.

Many thanks. I was not aware you can choose opposing schools. Just seemed to me that each school would have its natural opposite.

I guess I didn't read the class description enough. Perhaps I have AD&D.

Shadow Lodge

It's less natural opposites, more "the wizard's least favourite school subject."

The only schools that have have predetermined opposition schools are the elemental ones.

AND the Thassilonian Specialist as mentioned previously in this very thread.

Pretty much. There's no reason not to be a specialist. Preparing 1 "forbidden" spell of each spell level breaks even with the extra slot you get from specializing.
