Party is resting mid-citadel attack - how do the defenders respond?

Wrath of the Righteous

Mild spoilers for Sword of Drezen - go away, Dickerson!

...

The party charged in through the gatehouse and cleared out the chamber in F4. They immediately headed to the Chapel of Torag, and decided to fortify that room and rest/regain.

So I'm trying to guess how the remainder of the 'residents' on that floor might respond. In the module, only Staunton's reactions (or impatience) is mentioned - the rest of the baddies are more primed to handle that first wave of attacking heroes. Plus, the book seems to assume that PCs will retreat back out of the citadel to rest, rather than try to create a beachhead.

Any suggested reactions? I'm not sure I want the entire castle coming down on the party while they recuperate, but there's gotta be consequences for taking a nap while your breaking & entry is in progress...

Were they followed into the chapel or were they seen going in there?
Ive had a similiar situation arise and heres what i did weither u want to go the route or not. I had a party wantvto rest for 8 hours in a similiar situation so what i did was i rolled a percentage die each hour starting at 10% and each hour go up another 10% to see if someone comes along and tries to enter. It got up to 60% before someone realized the place was locked. The next hour (gave them an hour to try to open or yell and go find help to open). Then it was a 50% roll each hour afterwards if they broke thru or not. Each time they passed i added more enemies outside to fighy that were trying to get in.
They had a fighter and rogue staying awake on lookout to warn of anyone got thru. The dice gods gave them favor that situation and the casters slept uninterupted. They ended up opening the barricade themselves and pull holy terror into the enemies. The players said it was intense watching the dice roll because i always roll out in the open and felt an acompishment for resting thru that.
Mage may vary on how groups would like that or not but it worked for my group and they felt there was consequences for doing whatbthey did, they were just luckyto bypass it.

To be honest, that depends on how good the other inhabitants rolled on their perception checks. Let's not forget that the citadel is compromised of stone walls about five foot thick and the doors are explicitly called out to be heavy, made of iron and generally closed. That's one of the explanations I internalized when asking myself why the entire citadel didn't storm in the direction of the first fights, as soon as the party intruded.

Just as a general rule, after several bad experiences with PCs attempting to overnight rest mid-assault I've taken to warning my players that if they do that they can expect to be TPK'd when the defenders counter-attack. It ought to be obvious to the PCs that stopping to kip in the middle of an attack on an organised stronghold is a terrible idea, but players can get metagamey and think of it more like a computer game.

Kinda asking myself why they would want to camp in the citadel in the first place? They have a fortified army camp outside where they can rest safely.

Not really sure, but I think it's partly because of how tough the fight to get past the gatehouse was for this group. Vrocks are tough, even for a mythic party, but even tougher when they are able to summon in a second vrock...

Good point about the monster's perception check, magnuskn - however, I'm assuming that even thick stone walls aren't going to do much against TWO stunning screeches...

It depends on your desire to either punish or scare the party. There is more than enough random demons of various CRs that could find the party.

Also are they keeping watch and how out of the way and defendable is the location?

At this point Battles are still going on outside while the Party is doing a commando raid into the Citidel. So unless they make a big show of their attack, the rest of the demons have other things to worry about.

I'd stick with the chance patrol that would find the Party.

My party thought about doing that and I had to remind them that they were a five minute walk away from their army.

Andrew has it right; it depends on the tone you want. You can skim past this or hit them with something. The nabasu is closest and he could be out for a stroll to add more ghouls to his entourage
