Can you bless a Holy candle?

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

We just finished Hook Mountain. We have been playing that you could not bless it since it does not use the language of "check"; but I wanted to get a definitive answer.

I haven't found the Bless card yet, I'm guessing it gives a bonus to checks?

Probably means a Blessing of ...

And no, the 'duration' of the Holy candle is not a check, just like the number of items found in a battered chest is not a check.

It's not a check. If you could bless Holy candle, you could also bless a cure to get more cards in, to get a better boost from aid, basically anything with a random value.

But howe can you tell when its a random # genrated or an actual "check ?

Because checks are a specific thing, they have specific rules and terminology. A check is rolling against a difficulty value. There's a specific number you have to meet or exceed in order to be successful, otherwise it's a failure.

I.E.: You check to see whether you succeed or fail.

Simply rolling to determine an outcome without having that requirement isn't a check, it's just rolling the dice.

Thx! Now I Knowe :)

Also, every time you are asked to make a check, the word check is explicitly used. So if you don't see the word check, it isn't a check.
