General feats not so general

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Every time I go to customize my character to reflect what I see her as I went to feats in 3.5.

Wanted to talk to undead? Neat feat for that. Wanted to be a store owner? Yep theres a feat.

But in pathfinder it feels like every other feat has a racial requirement to it, which kinda makes it not so general no? Why are there so many feats that require races?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Because a lot of the feats appeared in race-specific supplements (e.g., Halflings of Golarion) or the Advanced Race Guide or have significant lore behind their initial publication context. Feel free to disregard or reflavor for your own game, especially if it isn't set in Golarion.

Beyond that, some are just ???, like Stabbing Shot being elf-only. Of all the uniquely elven ways to practice archery, melee attacking would not have been in the top ten ways I'd have thought up. I blame Peter Jackson.

I'd assume the race-specific supplements (including the ARG) may not be the issue as much as the relatively large amount of race-specific feats in books such as the Advanced Player's Guide. I don't understand the prevalence of feats with racial prerequisites in that book, either.

What sucks is like 45% of them are for gnomes.. what is paizos lovefest with gnomes.

No reason whatsoever.

Unless a feat, trait, prestige class, whatever interacts directly with a race's mechanics, it shouldn't be racially restricted.
