In our party, my wizard worked with the alchemist, including offering access to spell-lists. Do 0 level spells do an alchemist any good? What about if a metamagic feat was used with the spell to raise it to level 1? In particular, Detect Magic or Read Magic might be useful extracts, for party splits, if they are in the other party from me.
What about spells like Magic Missile? Would an extract allow the alchemist to then fire it off, or would it cause the Alchemist to take the damage of the Missile?

First, cantrips aren't just 0th level spells in Pathfinder, but a distinct class feature. Alchemists do not have cantrips.
Second, you can only learn spells from a wizard's spellbook if those spells also appear on the alchemist's extract list. They're learned as extracts of a level appropriate to the alchemist, not wizard.
Third, Metamagic feats have no bearing on spellbooks. They're applied when a wizard memorizes their spells per day. Alchemists, as written, can't even make use of metamagic feats.
