Which one does not belong?
SCISSORS PIN KNIFE AXE

Spoiler:
Pin. The other ones have sharp edges; pins have a point.

That's one, and how I figured it out.

Silver Crusade

Also 10 out of 10. But considering the time for one of the tests was 60 questions in 40 minutes, I might not have done as well in the timed environment. I think I spent over two minutes solving the GRIN,IRON,RING,LINGO one.

It's not really difficult? I know quite a few kids who could do all of these, it's just not trying to take shortcuts to find the right answer, I got them all correct on my first try, and I know my preteen-aged brother could accomplish it.

Liberty's Edge

Actually DID get 10 out of 10. Used a calculator on the last one, but that's it.

Liberty's Edge

Trevor is taller than Daniela‚ and Nadine is taller than Hamish. If Samira and Nadine are both shorter than Daniela‚ who is second-tallest?

Spoiler:
Daniela. They already said Daniela is taller than Nadine who is taller than Hamish.
Since Samira and Nadine are shorter than Daniela, and Trevor's taller, then she's second tallest.

That's two.

Actually, these really aren't all that hard.

That's one, and how I figured it out.

I think people on this forum may have an unfair advantage on that one.

Spoiler:

I know when I saw it first thing my mind went to was slashing vs. piercing.

Liberty's Edge

The Lena one is so simple I'm bored with it all now.

Go find a real iq test.

yellowdingo does some crazy things.
This being easy makes me wonder if the actual objective is not to test people for "smarts" but rather to see how many people will visit the link.

10/10, in about 4 minutes.

Dark Archive

10 for 10. The number:letter code took me a little bit, and I needed a calculator for the last one. At forty seconds per question in the real thing (60 questions over 40 minutes), I'd probably lose time in some but make it up in others.

Wouldn't knife and scissors be piercing or slashing?

My line of thinking was going towards everyday usage and not as a weapon. Scissors, for example, generally aren't designed to poke things with. At least in my experience with them. Emergency weapon? Heck yea it'd be piercing.

Knife I suppose would be stabbing at times on standard usage. I was just thinking of cutting food stuffs.

So how about the Pin is piercing only?

Shadow Lodge

Yeah, but if the category were things you'd find in a kitchen cabinet what doesn't fit?

Probably still be pin for me, but i'm weird and have a hatchet in my kitchen for the occasional dangerously handling of coconuts.

Liberty's Edge

10 of of 10.

Knife, Scissors, Pin, Axe:
The pin doesn't have an edge.

Scarab Sages

10 / 10, taking a bit more than 5 minutes, most of the time I used to figure out the word/code question.

After question 1, I call "foul" and refuse to participate.

  • Scissors have a hinge. Pins, axes, and (fixed-blade) knives don't.
  • Also, "Scissors" is 2 syllables. "Axe," "knife," and "pin" are all 1-syllable words.

That's two perfectly valid reasons why "scissors" should an acceptable answer.

  • 1 person marked this as a favorite.

Question 3 has no correct answers. "45 x 9" is meaningless; the correct answer would be $45/m^2 x 9 m^2.

For the hen question, we have insuffienct information. It seems unlikely that all hens lay eggs at exactly the same rate. Are some of them are past menopause, and don't lay eggs at all?

    Liberty's Edge

The Bob and Kylie one is dumb too; it doesn't give their interest rates on their savings accounts, or their tax brackets.

Disclaimer: Once upon a time, I was on the Standards of Learning test construction committee for the State of Virginia. There's a whole field of learning concerned with test construction, especially geared toward how to make sure the test is measuring what you want it to measure, and not other stuff -- in this case, the test is directly measuring one's ability to ignore real-world considerations in favor of simplistic math puzzles.

  • I got 9 out 0f 10 exactly because of the hinge issue

10 out of 10, but I had to use a calculator on the long division

I'm throwing the question out on Kirth's say so.

    So you got 100%.

Not sure yd would agree, but he thought gigantopithecus was a carnivore. Maybe he ended up learning about evolution from Peter Jackson's King Kong. So,....

Just to let you know, there was three pages of notes I was going to cover, and it will all be on the midterm next Wednesday.

10 out of 10 ... had to break out a pen and paper for one of them (the code)

As to the axe knife pin scissors ... Kirth makes a great point. :)

    Two of them!

10 out of 10. The last one probably took me the longest. The Code was actually the easiest...I just looked at the common last letter of the words matched them up and checked for it in the answears. (It was the letter 'N').

But not really a hard test.

Got all 10, and didn't even need a calculator for the one with the 1190 - I basically knew the right answer from intuition + remembering that 30^2 is 900.

That's nothing though. I once participated in a competition where two contestants are asked to solve a calculation, and the one to answer first with a correct number wins. I was up against this guy, who was a quicker thinker than anyone Iv'e ever known.

The judge starts by saying "203, divided by..." and let it hand there for a moment to get the tension up. Then, he completed the sentence with "7". The guy I was up against shouted "29" in less time than it took me to blink.

Seems that as soon as the judge said "203", the guy was thinking "203 is 210, which is 30 times 7, subtracted by 7".

0/10. I didn't immediately see a test, and lost interest shortly thereafter. In fact, I -- Oh shiny!
