Alkahest Frost Bombs

Rules Questions

Shadow Lodge

Hello All!

I was wondering [whilst pondering the Crypt Breaker archetype] how the Frost Bomb Discovery and Alkahest Bombs Class Feature are supposed to work together?

I came up with:

A:They don't work together, and you can't combine any of the bomb discoveries with Alkahest Bombs. Worst-case Scenario

B:The bombs do 1d4/2levels cold and risk staggering foes directly hit by them. Best-Case Scenario

C:The Bombs do 1d3/2levels cold and risk staggering on direct hits. Most Probable Scenario

Mainly thinking that the d3 damage is most likely since that is included in the other archetypes that reduce bomb damage size.

Why would it ever use d3s?

B gets my vote (1d4 + 1d4 per 2 levels beyond 1st, to be exact). The only reason most bomb modifiers don't stack is because of a clause in the Discovery class feature, which only applies to discoveries themselves. Frost Bomb modifies the damage type and adds the stagger, but doesn't affect the damage dice. A frost-alkahest bomb would still roll d8s against constructs and corporeal undead, d4s otherwise.

I was thinking that the d4 thing was supposed to be a nerf to bomb damage by reducing it, in exchange for additional effects. Figured it probably wouldn't be A, but thought that C may have been the intent.

Still don't understand where the d3s would come from, but I'm confident it isn't A.

Frost bombs don't reduce the damage dice, nor is Alkahest Bombs a discovery. Therefore, the answer is B.

On the other hand, if you used the Force Bombs discovery, there is a case to be argued to reduce the damage dice to d3, since force bombs imply such a reduction.

Liberty's Edge

RAW, it would deal the same damage as a normal Alkahest bomb. So d8s against constructs and corporeal undead, and d4s against the rest.

All Frost Bombs does is make the damage cold and add the potential stagger.
